    Growing fodder for chickens

My girls (chickens) all loved the BOSS when I did that for them, but pumpkin seeds? OK, I HAVE to ask, did you buy the seeds, or are they from pumpkins you raised or bought at a store? I'm asking because I am thinking crazy thoughts right now about what I am going to plant in my new garden...

    Growing fodder for chickens

@ HELLOROE, I don't understand the "need" for darkness. If you look back on this thread you'll see pictures of the rack I built in my office, on the wall opposite the window. There is no 'darkness' here except at night. I haven't found any reason to stop light from getting to the grass(es)...

    Growing fodder for chickens

I agree, if you keep them covered, you will encourage growth of things you don't want. Let the air in, and if you REALLY want to help the growth, add a small fan to keep the air circulating.

I didn't really want to seem like I was "jumping" on you for asking this kind of question, but yeah ... I really AM. When you went to school, the teachers taught you to read, then added a little math into your education, then you probably went on to high school and maybe college. Now, after...

    Growing fodder for chickens

Thanks, Gallo, but that's just the nature of things I guess. I started a whole new batch of day old chicks in March, 30 new kids, including a white leghorn male and three white leghorns, and eight French La' (something or other) that were all just beginning to lay. I lost 17 in one afternoon...

    Growing fodder for chickens

Wow, thank you for the good words, Gallo, and if I did this correctly, there ARE pictures of my setup here. And I am sorry I haven't been too "helpful" lately, many many things happening here, including another devastating loss of nearly half my chickens. Skip

    Growing fodder for chickens

WOW!!! Talk about paying through the nose. Why not "let your fingers do the walking?" A 50 pound bag would have cost you roughly the same amount. People, instead of saying "I can't read through this whole thread, where can I ..." READ the darn forum. A lot of us have spent time, energy...

Just throw them in as they are out of the bag. The shells will open, and it's really neat sometimes to see the grass growing with a crown of empty shells stuck to some of the grasses. And it's not really a grass as in wheat or barley, it's more like a small plant, there will be leaves...

    Growing fodder for chickens

Yes the girls will love all the BOSS you can throw at them, and you CAN include BOSS in your fodder. It floats as already mentioned, but it sprouts just as well and as fast as the Barley and Wheat. If you want to mix a little BOSS in with either Barley or Wheat, feel free to do that too. The...

    Growing fodder for chickens

I just felt the need to jump in here for a minute. Several questions have been asked about how long to let the water soak, or drain. I have posted several pictures of my set-up, it came to me after several tries with blocks or lengths of 1" X 2" scrap I had to separate the trays, putting...

    Growing fodder for chickens

Yeah, IF I had the time, IF I wanted to start something new, IF I had enough money to start another new business, IF the sun rose in the West, IF I didn't have enough time in my day and IF I were younger than my 70+ years ... I might think a bit more on that idea. Hey, I tossed it out there...

    Growing fodder for chickens

Hi Carl, I only get into town one day a week, and I don't even think I will be going in next week. I lived in the High Desert of California (Lancaster area) for more than 15 years, and I learned then that you do NOT go to the store for a gallon of milk, or a loaf of bread. You keep a pad handy...

I just did a real quick search on Google on growing barley in Thailand, and this is what I found, first listing, might be something for you to check out? http://www.ccpnorthern.com/ Remember, our barley is grown indoors, not in a large field, and not in any type of dirt, planting soil or...

    Growing fodder for chickens

Well, there really isn't a "system" as such. And I have never tried the auto watering idea. I put about a gallon and a half into my top tray, and by the time that ONE watering gets to the drain bucket at the bottom, it is so badly discolored (probably from the red wheat) that I wouldn't want...

Keep reading, answer is below No, I do not work for Wal*Mart, nor do I have stock, but I DID work IN Wal*Mart as a traveling vendor back in the early 90's, I had a total of 18 stores that I would travel too, set up a display, stay for a week and move on to another store. It was a different...

Hmmm ... two questions, and the truth please. How often did you NORMALLY shop at Walmart before you made this statement? And do you REALLY think a few dozen (or less) people buying something talked about on this thread was the cause of this increase? Haven't you read the posts where prices...

    Growing fodder for chickens

I didn't go with any scientific facts, but I put about a cup of seeds in about a gallon of water and just pour a "glug-glug" of bleach. I have been doing this now for several months and have never had any mold problems AT ALL. That soaks for twenty four hours, then I rinse and put into a...

    Growing fodder for chickens

I water twice a day also, and with fresh water. I use an open cardboard milk quart container, but anything that holds water should do well. Since I am using the quart container, I dump two loads into the top container, and let that trickle all the way to the bottom. I do this twice for each...

    Growing fodder for chickens

How to grow fodder, for the person/people that haven't already read the whole thread, here is a synopsis of what I have been doing to get grass from barley Get the amount of seed that you need. Roughly one half pound of seed for every square foot of tray space. I've found I use a little less...
