Very difficult to tell in this picture and at this stage. You can try taking hold of the tail feathers and a duck with produce a loud quack. The drake will begin to darken around the bill with greenish feathers starting at the base of the bill. And the drake doesn't have the laced feathers like...
Mine are pretty hardy. I haven't needed to do anything special. And mine are excellent layers. They lay 7 days/week and have been since mid winter.
Right now they are out-laying my chickens.
The one in front is a drake judging by the darker feathers coming in around his bill and the washed out brownish wing feathers without the pencilling that the females have. I'd say the second one is a female. You could most likely do the tail test and find out real quick.
Hold bird and grab...
I found that shavings got way too wet, and that hay worked best. They will poop all over it but it is easy to change and the hay underneath doesn't get soiled just the top layer, when they sleep and poop and walk all over it, talk about it ~ then do it all over again.
If you put water in for...
Whatever, it's not a crime. As a matter of fact I would be most likely liable if my ducks caused an accident ~ so we are putting up a fence.
He's doing fine. Here's a picture from yesterday. Shows his beak fracture and the abdominal wound that goes clear to the other side.
It's really hard to believe, especially since the speed limit on our stretch is 50km/hr (like a school zone) ... My husband said the car slowed down then ran him over and took off. The car behind stopped and picked him up off the pavement.
I'm just glad he's on the mend.
Fencing will start...
He was hit by a car. There are bugs across the road that are hatching from the ground and I think that's whats drawing them. We are putting a fence next week.
