My other three hens that are like that and I've had them for longer than the three I've mentioned.
Actually, those used to be a lot tamer, but one of the dogs got into their enclosure one night and chased them. Many feathers were lost and the chickens were seriously traumatised...
*LOL*
Well, the Araucana and Marans that I got together with the Leghorn ate from my hand a lot sooner. They come to meet before I get to the gate and follow closely as I carefully (to avoid stepping on them!) make my way to the coop. I can touch them and pick them up (which I don't often do)...
My Leghorn is taking food from my fingers! It's taken almost three months, progress has been slow and gradual but finally she started taking bits of peach peel that I offered. At first she'd snatch and dart off to the other end of the coop, but by the end of the session she was sticking around...
Aw, they are lovely! I'm glad they're settling in. :)
That's such a nice space! I had no idea there were breeding clubs that provided areas for keeping chickens. Is this common in Germany? It sounds a bit like having an allotment (vegetable garden) for people with no gardens?
Hi Astrid!
Congratulations on finally being able to get your chickens!! :wee
Wow, you've had a long wait but I'm glad your patience has paid off!
Your set-up sounds really good. I look forward to seeing photos if you'd like to share them.
:)
Thanks for that! I searched online and have an idea of what you mean.
Building a cabinet would be beyond my skills, but modifying an existing piece of furniture or shelving unit is within the realms of possibility.
If you have any experience with these or any other tips for me to consider...
This was my first idea but I was told it takes some time (several weeks) and there are a few problems:
a/ Finding a suitable sunny area that is raised (because of insects) and not accessible to the dogs (because free buffet!)
b/ Having to bring them in at night (because of dew) - we can't do...
Ooh, I envy you! We get masses of figs - and all at the same time of course. I ended up freezing two drawers full of them and we use them in smoothies. Would much rather have dehydrated figs.
A Black Copper Marans, Leghorn (golden) and Araucana (blue golden without ear tufts). They should be about 4 - 4.5 months old.
Re: your oven's minimum temperature of 30c (so as not to derail your thread)
Wow... so you can dehydrate stuff as well as incubate chicks! That was a good investment...
Good morning to you!

We're about 11 kilometres inland as the crow flies; in the sierra up a dirt track 3 km away from the closest village, ensconced in a nature reserve. :)
