    Broody Hen?

If your talking about just smaller, like a medium when she normally lays a large, mine will lay a smaller egg for a short time, then resumes laying large eggs again. But then, most of the eggs mine lay have varied in size more this year than they did last year. Last year was their first year...

    Broody Hen?

It does seems strange that she is still laying. But maybe it's not so unusual. I can certainly see why your betwixt. Whatever is going on, I hope things get back to normal for you and your girl soon.

    Broody Hen?

My girl laid an egg this evening! It's only been 4 days since she quit being broody. Not bad! 4 days to break her, 4 more days and she's back to laying.

    Broody Hen?

That is really wild! She is one determined hen! It's also been my understanding that they quit laying while broody and don't start laying again for at least a week. My hen, who recently quit being broody, keeps going in and out of the hen house, looking at the nest and talking to herself. It's...

    Broody Hen?

I have made it before. It's not difficult, just time consuming. A proper recipe will call for using the whole egg, not just the egg white. Hope you have a stand mixer b/c the key is adding the oil very, very slowly. Holding a hand mixer while adding the oil can get tiring. The results though are...

    Broody Hen?

Yes I have plenty of room in my basement:) When you say Egg Mayonnaise, are you referring to mayonnaise made with just eggs and oil and maybe a touch of lemon juice or vinegar?

    Broody Hen?

I might have to try that myself also. Minus the 50lb bag of lime. I'm sure I'll pay more per ounce, but 50 lbs of most anything is too much for me. Think I'll look up the video that aart mention too. The freezing doesn't sound like a bad idea, but freezer space is a bit too limited for that to...

    Broody Hen?

Thanks for tip about the cage mesh! Duhhh...why didn't I think of that.:thI have twine criss crossed on the bottom of my dog crate to fill the gaps from missing bars. Which was why I didn't want to "suspend" the crate.

    Broody Hen?

Oh, that is so sad. It's strange how some can survive vicious attacks and others die so easily.

    Broody Hen?

Sounds like she's broody. Mine growls at me and any hens who venture into the coop when she's broody. She pecks at me when I pick her up, but she's never given me a serious bite. Let us know what you observe tomorrow. BTW, your avatar is adorable! Is that one of your hens?

    Broody Hen?

I'm with you on that Col. I've only been getting 4 eggs a day from my 6 hens since Betty first went broody. Of course I shouldn't complain. When I was getting 6 for 6 eggs I could barely keep up with all the eggs! I was giving them away to my brothers and my neighbors, cooking them for my dogs...

    Broody Hen?

My luck is also holding out Col. My little lavender girl is not showing any unusual interest in nesting either. One broody hen in a flock is more than enough for me:D.

    Broody Hen?

Betty is definitely finished. She stayed off the nest the rest of the day yesterday and last night. Didn't even have to block the nests. And, she back to her od sweet self, letting me pet her and following me around, talking softly. No more stink eye.:yaYou'll get there! Keep us posted.:pop

    Broody Hen?

I think I broke my BO! She's been off the nest all afternoon. This was day 4, so maybe it wont take too long for your girl. BTW, I never did suspend the dog crate I had her in. It's such an old and dilapidated crate that I'm not sure it would have been safe. Besides, it wasn't like she was...

    Broody Hen?

Oh no! Maybe this one wont be as persistent as the other one. I had another one who was BFF's with Betty who went broody with her last year but she gave it up on her own after just a few days. I think she liked to eat better than she liked sitting on an empty nest. Unfortunately, I lost her to...

    Broody Hen?

You seem to be having better luck than I'm having. Betty stayed out for a bit more than an hr, but as soon as another hen laid an egg, she was back on the nest. I kept the nests blocked off last night and will block them again as soon I "think" the others are finished laying. Meanwhile, Betty is...

    Broody Hen?

Oh yeah, I read on another web site that they lay by 10 AM . It was stated as though it was a hard and fast rule. I've got one that will lay as late as 5 PM. They seem to just mosey into the hen house any old time of day. Finding eggs from all of them before noon is the exception, not the rule...

    Broody Hen?

Of course i just went out to check on her and she was back on the nest:barnie. I will be blocking the nests later. I just wish the other girls would be consistent with laying early and getting it over with. Instead, I've got some who sometimes don't lay until late in the afternoon. If I don't...

    Broody Hen?

Let's hope we both are at an end to the broody season. Betty is also still out in the yard this morning. She's such a sweetheart and I'm sure she would make a great little mother hen. I think next year, if I need to add to my flock, I'll wait until she goes broody and slip a couple of baby...
