Mine is wonderful, rarely crows, (mostly around dawn) and has such a lovely deep voice, it isn't grating on the ears. Neighbours say they don't even hear him. He does crow at the rottie next door if she gets too close to the fence, but not much otherwise.
@TheSpiceGirls Oh I see. I know what you mean about her temperament though. I have a J.G. Cockerel, and he's just amazing. Very calm and stately, and while I don't want to use him for breeding, I just don't want to let him go. I reckon if you keep the treats coming, she'll be fine
It's her age. Larger birds sometimes "age" more quickly than smaller ones. Not much you can do about it. If you have a cock bird, I'd get some fertile eggs and hatch them while you still can.
@joelharris how come you only have one? Once you get bitten, well, time will tell! I'm planning on hatching as many as I can this spring. I'm trying for blues; also blue in the Marans and Ameraucanas.
He does look gamey, but the lady I got the eggs from got all hers from Maria ('s Jersey giants) so I assumed it was a stage he's going through. This is my first year with them. The hens are cousins of this cockerel - and thanks, the splash is very pretty, as are her sisters.
I'm just going to...
These are a couple of mine. The cockerel was 18 weeks in these pics. Blurry pics.
The first one - he's with one of my splash Ameraucanas. (For size comparison, he's going to be huge, she isn't small!)
He's in the gangly, growing stage - 18 weeks
One of the Splash hens - also have a blue.
I know about the compensation - it doesn't help US, but it makes a point to THEM. If you don't ask for anything, they think the birds aren't worth anything, and they won't bother trying to keep their dogs home. It's only when you hit them where it hurts most (either their dogs or wallet) that...
It's one we know well too!
Perhaps another phone call first though, to see if they will be nice and compensate you - not that it's real compensation, but at least see if they are going to be a problem in the future.
I am so sorry about this - must be devastated. I would not be nice about it either. I'm sure they would be pretty unhappy if you came onto their property and killed their dogs. I hope you have asked for compensation. In some states it can amount to quite a bit. Plus, some state make the owners...
Woohoo! Picking up some J.G.s on Sunday, Black and Splash I thinks, so should be able to make some nice blues! The cockerel I have is HUGE (from the same stock) so I'm really excited.
I didn't notice any difference at hatching. But, around 8 weeks they showed a big variation (J.G.'s vs BCM's) and at 12 weeks the Giants literally towered over the rest. My one cockerel at 14 weeks towers over my 18 month Brahma!

I don't bond with most of my animals, since I don't like to "eat" my friends, and these are "Meat". My goats, rabbits, ducks and chickens are "food".
My dogs are "pets".
Having said that, they are all treated humanely.
Some hatchery birds are as good as some "SQ" birds - so don't spend the money yet. Let the kids show the ones you have. Some shows have a lot of birds others very few of a breed, so the kids could end up with ribbons for hatchery stock, or get no ribbons for SQ stock! (Depending on how much...
Hi all, well I find I have two Black J.G.'s, one cockerel and one pullet. Thing is, I'm new to this breed. They are twelve weeks old and I'm wondering when they will get tail feathers. Is it normal to grow them so late? They are huge, far bigger than their Marans clutch mates. Their legs are...
Pity you are so far away - I'm in Washington State and have a few J.G's I need homes for. I don't suppose you ever get up this way do you? Mine are only 12 weeks old, but very big!
Sorry, I thought you were serious. Many people think chickens can be papered, and I thought you might be one of them.
As far as mine go, I'm not going to keep them. While really nice, I'm concentrating on the Blu Copper Marans.
These were from a lady who got her eggs from a breeder in...
