Hi, Yes, I agree. I cull wide neck rings out and hardly get any now. Legs darken up a bit with age. They are such a lovely all-round breed and rare so best to be sure he's pure. It annoys me when people cross them.
Hi. He looks very good to me - stands well. Good colour. Don't get one that stands squat like a mallard. His bill should be a more olive green - but could be the photo and I had some yellowish like that and they went more olive with age. How old is he? Orange legs, so is he just a youngun...
Ha! Good luck getting them to sleep in the house. I have found they will sleep where they want - mine have houses with straw and still a couple of them choose to sleep under the worm farm.
Hi. No, but it is up to you - I never did. It's just that they may not hatch as many or you may lose a couple. I think still better than getting none at all - even if you just let them hatch one batch and see how they go. I can get my older ones, especially, to raise more than one lot in a...
Hi. Yes, it would be good. Shame I am so far away. I had a well known poultry judge here 'borrow' my best pair last year, that took me nearly 10 years to get, as he needed a good example of the breed for something that weekend. I didn't get them back and found out he was showing them up and...
Yes, they have some great looking birds on their website and it is very informative, great photos! You are lucky to get WH from such a good source. I wish that I could get stock from there, or anywhere else. I don't know of anyone in NZ that has WH that haven't come from my line. People...
A silver drake on the left and a gold girl on the right. Moose Manor Farms website. I have found it fairly accurate, but because I don't know how I can tag them so young, I just count how many of each, and compare later on. Hope this helps.
Hi. The most distinctive differences between gold and silver WH is the silver have blue wingbars. The bronze drake can have either bronze or green - green not as common. Also the bronze drake's neck and head is overlaid with bronze lustre. The photo I have up is of a gold phase drake. Over...
Hi. I have been breeding WH for about 10 years. I have always let them sit on their own eggs. I have found them to be very good at incubating their eggs and quite protective mothers. I did find that if you have more than one duck laying in a nest they don't get sat on though. They just seem...
Hi. This thread is interesting. thanks. These are some of my gold phase WH, which is the accepted standard over here in NZ. I too prefer the silver phase, they are much prettier, and easier to breed - shame. I am interested in any comments. Thanks.
