@Star2014 I think your chick will be fine with a little rest. You did fine!! I would put something soft under it, so it can't get hurt on the plastic grate. Looks like a little absorption still need to happen (if I'm seeing it right!) *** What everyone needs to remember is that not all...

Water dries out too fast. Use Vaseline, or coconut oil, or even something like antibiotic ointment. Something oily that will stay moist.

Looks fine for now, it has plenty of breathing room. You could moisten the membranes, so they don't start sticking to the chick. It could hatch on its own now, or it may still need some help. If you want to help further -- and I don't think you really need to at this point -- but the next...

Other than waiting a little longer from initial pip for ducks, the basic process is the same. Ducks just commonly take up to 48 hours to zip, where chickens are a bit quicker. And ducks tend to pip multiple times before they actually start zipping. But overall, assisting is similar. Just slower...

Do you know how long it was internally pipped? A safe hole just allows it to have more air to breathe longer. Nothing happens instantaneously. I’d say just leave it for now and see if it can pip the shell on it’s own. Up to about 24 hours from the time it originally internally pipped, before...

Hi George! Has it hatched yet? The pic looks good. I don’t see any really strong blood vessels in the way, so that’s always nice. Now remember, since this one didn’t spend the normal day farting around in the air cell, it can take a little extra long, hatching from the wrong end. With that...

For future reference, once a chick starts zipping, and I mean starting a full zip, progressing an inch or so around the egg, they should complete the zip in about an hour. As long as they are still active and progressing, I may allow 2 hours, but if they stop for 15 minutes or more at a time, I...

This thread is old, but there is tons of knowledge in it, and lots of folks probably still follow it. So we’re always here to help too.

I found that with a few of my breeds, they couldn’t rotate to get out because of a messed up leg. Some I’ve ended up having to cull, others straighten out with leg banding or foot taping.

I woke up this morning to find this: I immediately grabbed the egg and luckily it cheeped at me. I quickly pulled the cap off and she popped out like a can of worms. Most of the membrane was not even broken, but enough was that it could still breathe.

I was on vacation, gone for 6 days, chicks were supposed to be due tomorrow. Arrived home yesterday with 7 of 11 already hatched! I hadn’t even added water yet. So I pulled those 7 and added some water, and the other 4 hatched yesterday afternoon. Seramas

It can be frustrating. But helping too soon can be disastrous, so try to hang in there. Watch for browning of the membrane or for the chick to struggle. Otherwise, they should be ok on their own.

A bruise usually is an indication they are trying to pip in that area. How far from the tip? Some can still successfully hatch that way, if they have room to maneuver. Others might need help.

That’s fine! Sometimes it’s necessary just to calm our own selves down. You know it’s still alive. :D I currently have seramas hatching. Just pulled the first 4 to the brooder.

How long after internal pip did you do the safe hole? What breed is it? You could widen it, but now that it already has a hole, it’s got air to breathe, so it *should* be ok. You did the pip for it, so it doesn’t really have to pip for itself. It may not do much until it’s ready to zip, which...
