    A broody coturnix??? New Photos!

I may have to section off part of then pen anyway regardless of my roo situation. Momma quail has NOT MELLOWED at all. While cleaning the hutch, she jumped out and tried to attack Keiko again. Good thing she is quick The weird thing was Cricket, our little English white hopped in to the hutch...

The pic of that single chick is one of the zombies I brought back from the dead Isn't it cute? That one is very curious and always comes to look when I open the hutch. (PLEASE don't be a roo! ) Another one hides when I open the door. The last one hangs with mom and keeps a wary eye on me

    A broody coturnix??? New Photos!

I've been trying to redo the roof of their pen so that has kept me busy. I will try and get more photos after work. Last winter I just had plastic for their roof. Rain and snow piled up and made a mess. I am putting clear polycarbonate panels up to replace the junkie plastic.

    A broody coturnix??? New Photos!

Just a quick update...we still have 3 chicks. The 2 mostly dead ones are doing great now and I can't even tell which ones were the frozen ones anymore. Well, one I can but only because it has really big eyes. It is so freaking cute. Momma Lucy Lu is doing a great job. I am AMAZED. Instinct...

    A broody coturnix??? New Photos!

They are...LOL But when I got them they were in a typical quail cage. They got MUCH calmer in the big pen on the ground. No more bald hens and broken feathers. They hunt bugs (Cricket got a moth yesterday), dig in the straw for worms (Romeo is a great worm hunter), and sprawl out on the straw...

    A broody coturnix??? New Photos!

Here is an album with new pics of the pen, mom and the remaining 3 babies. http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=77726&id=1398880757&l=ccfa774f32 Those water containers you see are used for thermal mass. Their pen is also a greenhouse. Not one I can grow in all year, but it does extend my...

Are these thing suicidal???? I checked on the quail when I went to feed the ducks. All was well. I grabbed their marble infested water pan to clean it and headed back in to the house. Took care of my son, bathed, etc.. and then went to bring out the clean water dish. I see 2 babies laying on...

    A broody coturnix??? New Photos!

I stumbled on that article around the time I started shopping for quail. I kept it in mind even when they were in a cage. I had silk plants around the sides, and added wicker baskets they could climb in and out of. I would put straw in there from time to time and it was "party on!". From the...

    A broody coturnix??? New Photos!

As for broodiness through the male lines...the male that is the father of the chicks is not the father of the hens that went broody. So we have no idea if he is contributing to this trait. Now for some bad news. We lost 3 chicks yesterday. 2 of them hatched but apparently never made it...

    A broody coturnix??? New Photos!

I hope it is a trait that is passed on, but since the quail are all running together I have no idea who's kids are hers and who's are Keiko's (my other brown). It also looks like I don't have any babies from my English White. The babies are all chipmunk striped. My brown roo is a racist and...

    A broody coturnix??? New Photos!

Momma Lucy Lu is doing the raising She makes all kinds of vocalizations to the chicks I never heard the birds make to each other in the 8 months I have had them. While I was working on the pen, she jumped out and tried to get the babies to follow her. They started calling to her because they...

    A broody coturnix??? New Photos!

Luck plus a natural setting. My birds are on the ground. outdoors and in a big pen. Straw floor. Foliage to hide in (some real some plastic plants). I give them game bird feed, seeds and veggies. They are really picky about the veggies though. Hopefully the babies will take to veggie scraps. I...

    A broody coturnix??? New Photos!

I went out to the pen this morning to check on the birds and refill feeders, etc... and got a bit of a shock. No, no babies yet, but broody mama was off the nest and kicking a$$! LOL She chased all the other quail until they cowered in a far corner near a water tank (used as a heat sink). The...

    A broody coturnix??? New Photos!

I need to give her her own food and water dish and put some hardware cloth over the entrance to keep the riff raff out. Oh crud! I am going to have to grind some food for the chicks aren't I? The chicks are so tiny! And marbles in the water...right?
