Momma Lucy Lu is doing the raising

She makes all kinds of vocalizations to the chicks I never heard the birds make to each other in the 8 months I have had them. While I was working on the pen, she jumped out and tried to get the babies to follow her. They started calling to her because they couldn't see where she went. She ran right back in to the hutch to be with the babies.

Still only 7, but she is still on the nest off and on. If nothing else hatches by tomorrow night or she starts avoiding the nest, I will pull the remaining eggs.

You are giving me hope for my girl! Last night i gave in and gave her 6 eggs. She ran around rather annoyed in the new cage i moved her too, but this morning she's tucked up and sitting tight on her eggs! Lets she if she can follow Lucy's very good example!

I hope it is a trait that is passed on, but since the quail are all running together I have no idea who's kids are hers and who's are Keiko's (my other brown). It also looks like I don't have any babies from my English White. The babies are all chipmunk striped. My brown roo is a racist and hates white girls apparently!

I will be keeping any hens...well...MrsE (another byc member) might grab a couple, but I will try to see if this trait is passed on. Any roos are going to freezer camp.

As for firing up the incubator, I might have to. I checked on her this morning and she was on the nest. It's a little chilly outside so all the babies were under mom. I couldn't see if there were any new additions. I will check again at lunch.

cant broodiness be carried through the male line as well as my buttons which have just hatched i paired a parent reared cock with a hen i had seen showing signs of interest in eggs/nest building in the avairy and both have sat on the eggs and are now raising the chicks however i know coturnix are different to button quail if i wasnt so far away id buy any males just to see if they have any effect

Congratulations. They are darling.

Are you going to blend the veggy scraps with water to make them bite size for the babies? Just a thought.

Of coarse we a patiently awaiting more pictures.
