Pea combs are linked with the blue gene. Because this cockeral has a single comb, the chance he will produce olive eggers is very slim even though he is an olive egger by breeding. He will produce brown egg laying offspring. Sorry if this has been answered already, I am way behind on reading...

Pick him/her up and look closely on the back by the tail for long skinny feathers (saddle feathers). That would tell you for sure it is a male.

Two cockerals, a BCM or mix and an olive/easter egger(looks to have a pea comb and puffy cheeks). My guess :)

Sorry for the triple post, BYC is being problematic for me this evening!

Quote: Luanne D'Amico, eight acres farm is somewhere in Florida. She would be a good contact to get Marans from, she raises many breeds. Also, Mathace on here (almost never any more though) is in Florida and breeds BCM as well. Heck, I think Bev Davis is in Florida, a huge breeder of Marans...

Quote: Where are you? It will cost a little more but you should be able to find a "started" pullet.

Look closely at the back of the right side of his comb. Enlarging the pic. it almost looks like a point that sticks straight out to the side. That would be a side sprig and is a DQ. Hereditable and a problem in the Marans. I Hope it is not there.

X2! I really like this Cockeral as well, as a youngster he has the "type" we should be looking for in all our Marans males. Too many high tails/too long sickle feathers and incorrect back angles. Leg feathering looks a little light and the back of his comb looks a little funny but hard to...

I breed Delawares and BCM and have worked with both for over 6 years now. Both breeds have a great personality and lay pretty well. If you buy from a hatchery, you will most likely get good layers but personality/temperament is not a goal in their breeding, just pumping out the numbers for the...

Thanks! My darkest layers only give me a few eggs per week, I think that is pretty typical so I was curious about yours :)

Nice! Are the darkies from BCM? How many eggs per week do the dark layers lay?

Some have good results with this. I hatch normal - 45 - 55% humidity first 18 days then bump up to 55% - 65% for hatch (last 3 days) right alongside my other breeds, New Hampshires and Delawares and have equally good hatches. IMO so much more depends on the...

They should not be mixed with Blue.

Some never show copper but they are still Black Copper Marans if the parents were pure. Clean shanks does not indicate she is a cross, but lots of other things do. Can you post a picture?

They can get darker but in my BCM they pretty much start close to as dark as they will get and they lighten towards the end of their cycle before molting or being broody. After any break from laying they start back darker again. Just my personal experience with my birds over 6 years.

Yes, you have 3 cockerals. Once the boys start feeling their hormones, 4 is way too many for 6 girls (they will be fine until then). I personally would not have less than 6 pullets per cockeral and preferably 8 - 12 in a community flock.

Wow! I grew up in Vancouver and my 9 year old nephew who lives there has a few chickens. Sounds like I need to take him some hatching eggs on my next trip up, he's quite creative at making money already :) In Oregon, I have sold my day old chicks for $6 - $8/each depending on my breedings...
