I think I have a chick. Yesterday I had 2 pips when I checked my broody. I had my suspicions that she was eating the eggs so I fed her a scrambled eggs to see if that might help somehow. Anyway...I went to check on her this morning and I couldn't get her off the nest to get a good peek but I...
Mrs. FP I don't think the hen actively killed the chick. It didn't looked pecked or anything. I think it might have gotten squished or something. Anyway I only got the eggs so the hen could do her broody thing. I have no interest in hand raising chicks. Although I bet my silkies would take...
Disappointing hatch day here. I went out to the broody coop this morning. My mom saw the broody standing up while I was out feeding the sheep. She screams at me that we hhave a pip! So I went to check on her. She was up and eating when I got there. I looked at the eggs and there were only...
I caught the broody off her nest for her little mealtime. I had given her 7 eggs but when I looked in there were only 6 in there. I think she must have eaten one. She is isolated and the egg was nowhere to be found. I guess she didn't read my post about how expensive those eggs were lol!
I realized my hatch day is only 4 days away. I'm starting to get excited. I don't candle eggs if a broody is hatching them so I haven't had much to contribute this month. Soon!
TigerJane I think you should see something soon. I believe they start peeping once they break through the inner membrane. The next step is pipping the shell. Keep us posted.
tigerJane I'm so happy for you. I have been watching your countdown on this thread and have been feeling bad about your eggs/chicks. I hope you get a few today. Good luck!
Kedreeva, I agree candling on day 10 is easiest and the best time to throw any out. I never toss an egg before day 10. I don't really candle the eggs the broodies sit on. I think they get rid of the bombs on their own.
txmel, I think your hen will know what to do with the eggs. I have heard that chickens don't count the 21 days it takes for the eggs to hatch. They just sit until something happens. As far as what you need to do for your broody...if she is still with the flock she may steal the eggs from the...
My eggs arrived and I moved the broody to her new house. She is a super star...hopped right on those eggs and got to work. I feel a little bad she has been sitting on other eggs for two weeks already and now she is starting over. I hope she sticks with it. These lavender orp eggs were kind...
I've got 2 broodies so I ordered some lavender orp eggs for them to split. I ordered 6 eggs but am hoping I get a couple extra because they are being shipped and I only ever get a 50% hatch from shipped eggs. But a broody is the best incubator so maybe I will get a better rate this time. My...
