I don't think Walt meant you specifically. "Lurker" is simply someone reading/following a thread or conversation who does not post. Whether they are feeling a bit intimidated or are uninspired to speak up, normally they quietly watch from "the sidelines" as the discussion moves along. I don't...

Tailfeathers, is this the male? https://www.backyardchickens.com/g/i/5234715/a/6252301/buckeye-breed-thread/sort/display_order/ He's pictured in a show cage here, so we'll have to take your word for it that he's out loose all day. Handsome fella. For the person who asked, Buckeyes have yellow...

I have seen owners and exhibitors use their hands (without actually touching the bird) to get a timid, crouching bird to stand up, but not a Judge at a show, that's why I asked about it. Nudging the bird's beak so it will stand up like "Red Cloud" does in his picture isn't awful. (Though I think...

I have no had a chance to watch the judging of the Buckeye exhibits at a show; Walt, do judges really reach in the cages of a Buckeye and stretch it's neck up like a stovepipe to determine it's type?

I think when describing the color, people should use color chips like they sell paint with; that way, one could say this bird is Sherwin Williams #666 (for those REALLY red birds...heh). It would be easy to go to the local Sherwin Williams store, pick up a paint chip sample with that number and...

"At what age do you stop free choice feeding if they are free ranging? I would like to feed them once or twice a day. But I know they are still growing so maybe they need constant easy food still. And can I wean them off providing grit in their feeder now? I still think of them as...

That is neat. Do you know if any of the other current tract holders are going to get Buckeyes too?

Standing by your line of birds has nothing to do with it. If you didn't buy them directly from the breeder, all you can say is that they are descended from that person's stock, but they are not that person's line. That's true no matter who the breeder is. (Just ask Joe Schumaker or better still...

Considering the fact that even free range chickens will eat maggots and clean the bones of anything dead they happen across, I don't see the harm in feeding commercial cat or dog food. (Some people I know supplement with fish food) Now, I don't, but that's not because I'm squeamish, it's because...

All good advice. The main reason you don't want to mix the two is the chicks might not eat enough of the medicated to allow the chicks to build up an immunity to prevent cocci (which is what the medication does) or they might eat more of the medicated and not get the benefit of the higher...

Don't offer them separately. Use one or the other. If it were me, I'd go with the game bird starter. Keep the brooder clean and you shouldn't have trouble with cocci, but oif you did, you can add Sulmet to their water to clear it up.

My goodness DRT, is it really that hard to say 'Congratulations Joe on a job well done!' and leave it at that? It's not like anyone at the ABPC designed those trophies. Money was sent to the club that hosted the show and *they* ordered them. If you ask this little Granny, I'd say it takes a...

Regarding feather sexing: to be accurate, you need to cross a slow feathering male with a fast feathering female. The Animal Science Department at the University of Missouri has a slide show that demonstrates the difference between slow and fast feathering on very young poultry. (1 to 3 days...
