Might want to do some additional research before proceeding. Chickens and guineas will peacefully coexist as separate flocks sharing a yard but putting them together in the brooder can result in some pretty ugly behaviors.

Good dogs! It's all in the training. Our dog was never a problem with the chickens and he was supposed to be a bird dog (Irish Water Spaniel). I'd worked with him from a pup so he'd leave the wild turkeys and ducks alone as they passed through the yard. It wasn't such a foreign concept to leave...

I have gotten chicks there a few times. The chicks have been very healthy, without fail. They are hatchery quality for looks. The "Ameraucanas" are EEs but every single one has laid blue to green eggs. The Welsummers I got there 7 years back were both true to type and laid spectacular giraffe...

Well, I don't know what kind of garlic I have because I just planted some cloves one day when I found the bulbs I'd bought at Aldi had sprouted in the refrigerator. :lau To say that it's resilient is a gross understatement. Nothing (but us) eats it, it spreads readily, and it doesn't need any...

I made a path to the coop with my free woodchips from the tree trimmers last fall and wow, what a difference! It was super muddy in previous years, not anymore. But yes, I'd like to get into the garden to weed the asparagus patch before picking time and there's no way I'm walking in there yet...

I grow a variety of heirlooms and different ones do better in different years. The biggest challenge AFAIK is tomato wilt which is a fungal problem exacerbated by humidity. Allowing room between plants helps so avoid the temptation to crowd them. I also mulch the ever loving heck out of them to...

I think that it's mostly about getting on an inspection list. They want people to practice sound management to prevent diseases from spreading. It does no good for a struggling species if you get a bunch of amateurs dabbling who then spread pathogens in their ignorance.

First off, GOOD JOB finishing the coop first! It's a little on the early side of the season for farm stores, I think. They'll have chicks within the next week or two, though. And there are breeders around who may be hatching if you're OK with straight run or don't necessarily want young...

I don't know that they will start over. It's a lot for anyone but the owner is 73 so it may be the sign that it's time to retire. 2000+ birds were in that barn!

I don't know how I missed it before but I caught a snippet on a previously recorded program that Poultry Hollow had a barn fire this month and lost almost every bird. And, the business wasn't insured so the payout will only be the 15K value of the barn itself.

Shade and a window fan on a timer here. Our coop is under oak trees so they have heavy shade in the hot months and sun in the cold ones. It's very helpful! I set up the fan once we reach 90F. I've frozen a container of water before to drop in their bucket waterer but it's so humid here that it...

I think you might want to re-read my post. The price was the same at the co-op but the package is 30% larger so the co-op is a much better deal than TSC.

If you use pine shavings, where do you get them and how much do you pay per bale? Please include bale size if you know. I was having DH get this at TSC because he drives by one on his way home. But, they have raised their prices several times. It finally went back down to $5.29 for 2.25 cu. ft...

There is a definite learning curve. I have a better opinion of it today now that I found the magical (but elusive) "off" switches for email notifications. I really dislike having to opt out of nuisance mail but it seems to have worked.

But, this soggy weather does accomplish something. It gives us a chance to evaluate the drainage in our pens! Silver lining? I need to do something about the path to the pens -- ugh. Thank goodness for mud boots.
