The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

We've had 18 inches of snow today. Just today! Tomorrow the extremely cold windy weather rolls in. My birds will be locked up during the cold spell. I think they'll be okay if I force them to stay in and snuggle! Gathering eggs will be a big challenge.

My chickens have been laying really well. We haven't had power in a week at our house. Not sure when it's coming back on. We've been told every day since last Sunday it would be restored. The chickens miss their heated water dishes, as do I. It's at least warmer today so the dishes won't freeze...

I have some that are laying like crazy without added light and others not so much. I only put the light on in the evening so we can see what we're doing to feed them. When the skies are darker than usual during the day, I'll put the light on to encourage them to go outside. If it's dark inside...

I've been too busy to post pictures or comment on much these days! Most of my 2013 babies are laying now. Yeah! My older group looks so good since they've gotten their feathers back. They were pitiful! Here's some pics of my Orpingtons and Tolbunt Polish.

I have switched from commercial feed to a local mill that mixes their own. I especially like their scratch because it's whole and cracked grains. It's about 10% protein. Now if I can get a good meat protein source, I'll stick with this mix. They usually make it while I watch and wait. When I...

I dropped my extra Roos off at freezer camp today. Kinda sad but it had to be done. I was happy to see 4 of them go. Sad to see the SFH go, but I can't keep them all.

We built ours out of left over plywood and other wood. We made a group of 6 at one time. 3 on top 3 on the bottom. I'll have to get dimensions from my husband. I might have a picture. I think each box is about 13x13 on the inside. The back is taller on the top level and the roof is angled.

My chickens have been locked up since Friday because a hawk sat on the coop. My boys need to fattened up before heading to freezer camp. At $3.00 a bird, I'm taking them to be processed. We don't have the time to learn on about 10 birds.

The crabby neighbor is just one of those complaining types. She complains about other neighbors dogs too. We all have 2.5 acres or more, so it's not like we are sitting super close. I think she needs to live in a remote area or a retirement village. Good thing it's hot today, her windows will...

Last year these same people complained about my rooster crowing, but I didn't have one. Um wrong house.

Where in Michigan are you Bluebird? I'm in northern Oakland county. Our neighbors across the creek came over tonight to complain about the crowing. They've always been the complaining type. Not the friendliest. Yep we have too many roos, but like I told her, they have to be big enough to...

Jockey, sorry for the loss of your cat. I too lost my 15 yr old cat 2 weeks ago. I would be afraid glass dishes would break. I'll stick to the black rubber pans.
