All feed can be fermented. It doesn't matter if it is crumbles, pellets or otherwise. Same method for all. My chicks went on it from Day 1 and have never had anything but fermented, started with chick starter now layer crumbles. They are 18 months old now.
My chickens only get fed once a day when I am out of town and have someone feed for me. They come a little later in the morning than I normally feed and give enough that they have access most of the day. They don't starve, believe me.
By fermented feed, I mean that I take store bought commercial layer crumbles and mix them with water until it is fermented. That is the only feed my chickens get other than table scraps on a RARE occasion and a scratch mix put out for them to play with about every 2 weeks.
Nothing. If your feed is fermented ideally they have all the nutrition they need until the next feeding. They are better able to utilize the nutrients in the feed so they eat less.
The only thing I add to my FF bucket is Black Oil Sunflower Seeds (BOSS). They sell them at Walmart and I usually get a large bag at a feed store. It is sold with the wild bird seed, not in the poultry department.
I feed FF 12 months out of the year. I am in AZ so my feed never freezes. My girls usually eat a good majority of their ration within the first hour of feeding. If they don't finish it all, I add it back to the bucket and stir it in.
I don't leave access to dry. My birds have been on FF from chicks and have never had dry food. I happen to feed twice a day but that isn't necessary. LOTS of people feed only once a day.
Don't put anything into your fermented bucket except grains, seeds, feed, etc. I don't feed moldy food to...
During the summer I scooped the leftovers back into the bucket since I live where it is very dry and if left overnight or all day it would turn to concrete. With the cooler temps I leave it out. I feed twice a day and usually by evening the morning feeding is gone. The afternoon snack though...
Mine exploded when I first started too. Some feeds will expand more than others and it probably also has something to do with environmental conditions. Glad your birds are liking it so well already. Mine have been on it since 2 weeks old, they are just over a year now and do not have any access...
I wonder that too. I'm pretty sure my #2 will step up to top hen, but she isn't loud. I would certainly hope that Snoop doesn't hand her trait down to the next in line if I get rid of her. I have 2 nest boxes and 4 hens. They only use one of them and a racquet does ensue if it is occupied and...
That's why I have the acrylic holder in the coop. They can't tip that over. When they get their snack it is on the patio (cool deck we call it here) like concrete and most times the alpha knocks it over. They end up eating it all off the patio and if there is some they don't get, the dove will...
I read both your blog links and your system seems to work great. Bathing hens is not fun, even if there are only 4. Hubby got drenched and girls were NOT happy!
We have so many people on the AZ thread who are turning to ducks. Some are even thinning out their chicken flocks for more ducks!
What new breeds do you have and what are you hatching out? I am lucky in that I keep chickens illegally so I can't expand my flock. I do have one chicken who has...
Jane, really lighten up. I don't think @BY Chicken Lady came off as an "authority" and never implied that not keeping water over it was inferior. Yes, many of us have been doing FF for a long time, many of us have done tons of research and have read through or been with this thread from the...
