Sorry, should have explained better. Or perhaps the lighting in your photo threw me off.
I took these photos from Marans club of australia website.
This boy had a good solid copper color to his hackle,
These guys here have a straw-color (to me) in their hackle.
The grading in the...
Type is about the body shape, carriage, and composition. You want a brick-shaped body, high-carried wings, the right tail angle, a broad leg spread, and a nice wide tented tail among other things. Some breeders use the analogy "build the barn and THEN paint it." All the pretty paint in the...
baunlee in my program #2 would be gone (straw instead of copper hackle) and #4 ( based on the white flecks you mentioned- I can't see him well in the picture). His tail could still grow in. I would keep 1 and 3, one as main boy and one as backup. They are still pretty young to be certain of...
Someone else asked me about a rumpless Cream Legbar that popped up in a line related to mine, so I did a little research. This is a very informative article with a section about rumpless genetics. The "accidental" rumpless condition appears to occur in 1/1000 chicks, and is not hereditary. I...
A rumpless bird does show up in time to time in random breeds, I don't know why. It is possible the genes came from up as a recessive in his Ameraucana line but as a general rule you don't see that.
I'd assume she is part Auracana, not Ameraucana. Auracanas are rumpless- Ameraucanas have tails. Pretty girl though! Hopefully you get some pretty olive eggs soon!
I think if you did that the buyers would tend to just call them Marans and it could lead to problems for other people if they sold them later... I would probably just call them a Marans mix and not specify the parents are both pure Marans but different color varieties, or just call them dark egg...
They say the 50/50 rule only applies to batches of 100+... like flipping a coin sometimes you get heads several times in a row before you get tails. But with 100 flips they are pretty close to even as you are eliminating some of the randomness.
Typically eggs get lighter, not darker. It is a common fault for marans to lay eggs that are too light, it takes a lot of work to breed without losing the dark egg genes. Mating the lighter laying daughters back to their dark egg gene father is one trick done to help, I don't know all the...
I was just wondering this myself- I picked up a Splash Marans pullet from a friend to put in my BCM pen just to see. Now I know! She's not laying yet but soon I hope!
Thanks for your thoughts. It was so disappointing that Big Stuff looked great and I bred a bunch of chicks from him and THEN at about 15 months after a molt the wing triangle grew in brown. I swear it was solid black before. He is a hefty boy. But I sold off all the birds except these new...
Been a while since I stopped in here, this thread moves too fast for me to keep up with it. :)
Mulling my options here- current boy has obvious wheaten influence via brown wing triangle so he has to go (it didn't show up until he was about 15 months old). He also doesn't have very much leg...
The middle boy is a blue copper, correct? Or is the photo lighting just really off? Are these pictures of 2 roosters or 3? It's really hard to evaluate without a level side shot photo. Do not breed #3 though, he has white legs instead of slate! Besides that he is gorgeous to me, even has...
