I HATE losing birds to predators, sorry for your loss :( I have two roos and two pullets from Fitzgeralds. They are around 6 months old and no eggs yet. I'm in the Panhandle of FL with the days being around 70 degrees so I'm hoping that will help them to start laying earlier than normal but...

A lot of chickens won't lay during the shorter days (not enough daylight). If they are young birds I wouldn't cull them just quite yet. From what I've heard/read Marans aren't the best layers during the winter months but others may be able to give testimony to their birds being different.

How dark are your Wheaten Marans eggs?

I bought some shipped eggs that weren't exactly cheap so I will be helping if needed!!

You just got to love recessive genes! It's a pain in the butt for the recessive white feather gene in the Welsummers.

What are some other common faults in the Wheaten Marans? Early in this thread a lot of folks were talking about the white cotton ball at the base of the tail. What color should the legs be?

Ah, that makes sense. I'm familiar with Bev Davis and her contribution to the Marans breed and I actually just joined that club bc of that. I can't seem to find a breeders list on the website though.

That's disappointing to hear about the bad experience from Fitz farms. This will be my first order I've ever gotten shipped, I hope your experience was a fluke but I guess I need to have lower expectations. Is there anyone else you would recommend buying from that has nice dark Wheaten eggs...
