Yes! It could have been bad news when I got home today.

Oh and I will probably still bake cookies for the Family.

My family is grossed out by the mealworms. I tell them" I could bake the mealworms, grind them up and put them in cookies. You guys would never know" lol!
But I don't think we're at that point yet. But they've had their warning ;)

Incubator/hatcher questions ... and a small rant.

Does anyone have a Dickey? How do you adjust the humidity?

Are there any hatchers, under $1000. that have automatic humidity adjustment?

I just had to set a large number of eggs. Too many for my RCom. The bad thing about the RCom 20 is that it's small. Not much room for pedigree baskets. So, I want a hatcher. The Dickey hatcher has multiple divided trays with covers. Perfect.

Back to my too many eggs for the RCom. I put eggs under two broodies. And I had to use my Genesis for the first time. Unlike BCollie, I HATE the Genesis. My first and only incubation experience was just with the RCom. For humidity, you fill the little hole that's right in front of the machine with water until the ball floats up to the top. Turn on the machine, everything is preset. Digital reading of temp & humidity, stays where it should be. Check the little floating ball every few days, easy to fill.

Setting up the Genesis for the first time ... fill up the channel in the tray, can't see very well how much water I put in. And then you put the screen & turner on top of it and can't even see it?! How am I supposed to know if the water's getting low and how do I fill it? I have to pour water in from the back - that's on a shelf against the wall. Grrrr. Who designed this ridiculous thing?!
I put a hygrometer in the Genesis and I've been checking the humidity on both machines every few hours. The RCom stays stable at 45%, sometimes goes to 46 for a moment then right back to 45. The Genesis is all over the place, ranging in the 50s & 60s. No little button to adjust it, like the RCom. I'm not pulling all the eggs out to mess with covering the water in the little channel that I can't see. All you hatchaholics think this is fun???

I HATE the Genesis. It is for sale as soon as I have something to hatch in!

So, back to my question about the Dickey. After dealing with this Genesis, I looked up how to adjust humidity in the Dickey. It looks like it may have the same type of thing, with a tray of water to regulate humidity. OH NO. I want something with a little button to adjust humidity. Is there such a thing?

Might try a local restaurant, deli or bakery. They may require you to get a agricultural certification though as if you were trying to sell through a farmers market.

Thanks!!
Funny enough, right after posting, someone local saw my advertisement on Facebook and said they'd take the 24 eggs that I have available. Yay! This will be my first time ever making money off my chickens lol...and it's still not even enough to cover a bag of feed

Good thing I love my chickies so much.

My humidity has been fluctuating between 33%-40% in my Genesis, not sure if that's normal or not. But you know when you need to refill the water tray when the humidity starts to go down, I was told it's usually a couple days. I think you can buy a humidity regulator for some incubators but they're REALLY expensive, as in several hundred dollars. I may be wrong on that one but that's what I remember reading. I personally love my new Gensis, but hey, to each their own. :) I'll take it off your hands if ya can't find a buyer

Lol! Good luck finding something that works for you!

I'd love to split an order! I'll be looking to buy at least a dozen. When you're ready to order let me know and we can talk it over :)
Will do! (probably around June 5 when I'm back from the coast)

BUT!!!! I just saw that Papa Brooder has a CL ad selling some of his birds and at the very bottom he mentions that he will be selling "local pickup" eggs at $1 each, just didn't mention which breeds...

I have UofA blue eggs pipping! Yay!

University of Arkansas Blue Egg Layers, or Arkansas Blues. They were a Graduate project from the University of Arkansas. They are Blue Genetics so the chicks can be blue, splash and Black. A blue rooster is in with two blue hens, two splash hens and two Crele Penedesencas. The chicks are so cute!

They lay very blue eggs because they are Aracauna crossed with Leghorns.

These are now on the MUST Have list...
A Black or Blue UofA Blue X CLB pullets should produce Sex Linked chicks. I have CCL(Crested Cream Legbar) X Crele Penedesenca and they are sex linked Olive egg layers. We call the Amelias because they love to fly!
and another reason... I mean I already have 2 CLB pullets!

Here is my sweet hen:
Cute!

1st UofA out of the shell, 2nd one pipping!
They are big chicks.

Whew! My hatch is due today but I ALWAYS have early hatchers. Not this time. None and no pips this Am.
Went to check at lunch and 9 pips.
Found your ads on CL as well when I was browsing; how easy are the Bresse to hatch?

My guess would be that it is the same breeds he mentioned in his Facebook listing. But how cool would it be if I could get Brahma eggs for $1 each?

I REALLY want Silkie eggs. Really bad. Or Polish eggs, but I can't find anyone locally who sells Polish eggs. Or Easter Eggers...Actually, I don't know what I want. I want ones that would hatch out chicks that are easy to sell!
Are you in the Redding area?

incubator ware house has this now:

I use a hygrometer and wait until the humidity goes down to 25% and fill one water channel. I also use cut out storage containers on the side:

What is the point of the cut out storage containers?
I use them to control the humidity rather than filling up a tank. I can see the water in them so I change it when it goes down. Each container will raise humidity 5%, so it usually gets humidity to 30%. It is less messy too. Sometimes it is hard to get the water in between the turner rails- especially when the egg turner is full.

I do not use them all the time though. I did for the last UofA blue hatch though.
