I'm the adoption manager with an animal rescue, AnimalPlace's Rescue Ranch. Our sanctuary is located in Grass Valley, CA, but also have a location in Vacaville, CA. We are happy to take in spent laying hens that will otherwise be culled or sold at auction. All birds we take in are treated for health issues, and then adopted to loving people who will keep them for the rest of their lives. (Birds that cannot be rehomed live out their lives on our beautiful and spacious sanctuary.) We are hoping to take in more birds from large-scale egg facilities, but convincing them to surrender some of their spent birds can be a difficult task. We currently will take in as many birds as needed--there is no specific upper limit.

We ask that you first try and rehome them, but if you cannot find a home for spent laying hens, we are willing to take them in. We are fairly flexible about location, we can often arrange transport if it will save birds' lives (although of course if you can bring them to one of our locations, that is ideal). Battery hens, hens from free-range egg farms, small scale operations... If they're retired laying hens and their other remaining options are soup or auction, we're happy to save them.

You can PM me any time on BYC, e-mail me at my work e-mail [email protected], or call me at my work number, (530) 798-5115 if you have or know of birds that need rescue. I work at the sanctuary Tuesday through Friday, 9:30-1:30 PM but if you don't catch me during my hours you can just leave a message. Thank you!

Additionally, we also have birds that are up for adoption. Currently we mostly have roosters (but gorgeous and very friendly roosters, and a wide variety--if someone is looking for an amazing rooster this is the place to look), who are free to adopt, but we have some hens as well. Hens are available for a small adoption fee. Anyway, you can read more about our group at our site, http://www.animalplace.org/

Just want to say that you are truly amazing for rescuing chickens. I plan on keeping all of my girls regardless of their production ability.

Good luck and I wish you were closer to me though:)

Awww, thank you! I personally keep all of my birds for their full lives, too (but then again I don't keep them for eggs in the first place--the eggs are just a bonus that comes with my pets). I'm so glad to be part of this group, AnimalPlace, that allows me to help out chickens who need my help. I think they all deserve to live our their full lives if possible.

If only we had somewhere like that on the east coast. Totally impressive. When we started with our first chickens in 2008 my mother in law wanted to eat them and I said ABSOLUTELY NOT cause if that is your plans then they will not be bought. I now have prob around 50, and got got 2 Emden geese and ducks and getting ready to get to get some goats, want a milking cow and the list goes on and on.

But if I ever get over to the west coast I will come check you guys out. And I have taken some of. My chickens to the vet before. One had surgery for internal laying.

You are amazing! if I had a bigger place I would have a shelter too. Is there anywhere in Arizona that adopts rescued Chickens & Turkeys? In the UK they adopt ex battery hens & I have not been able to find one here in the Phoenix area. I would love to help out and give them a second chance at being a spoiled free range pet.

I'm not sure if there are any chicken/turkey rescues in the Phoenix area, but once we get more birds in I can let you know and perhaps we could arrange transport for them so you could adopt some!

Currently I'm just compiling more egg farms and calling around, seeing if any farms are willing to give up some of their spent laying hens to our group. I've arranged some small-scale rescues so far of spent layers from people's personal flocks (who would otherwise become soup or go to auction), but unsurprisingly the bigger egg farms are a bit harder to work with. Hopefully I'll find some that are a little more open-minded soon and wouldn't mind giving up some of their birds to my group.
