What can I do for Chloey? Eye bleeding..pic UPDATED POST SURGERY PICS

Chloey is a young very friendly Toulouse goose. She has an area on her eye ring that is like a blood blister or kinda looks like when a dog has "cherry eye".It was a lot smaller but has gotten bigger in the last couple weeks. When she preens she breaks it open and it bleeds.Then when she feels the blood in her eye, she rubs it more onto all her feathers. I am working part-time and vets are not an option right now but I will bring her as soon as I can if nothing else is an option.We have done surgeries on Bumble foot and several different wounds through the years on all types of critters and are able to do surgery if we know how. Has anyone had this before? I was thinking maybe of making a cone for her head so she cannot rub it for a while....any ideas would be appreciated!We thought it probably needs to be cauterized but I am afraid to make her go blind. My DH says we may have to cull her...That is not an option either.Other than her breaking it open, she is fine and is extremely friendly.Here is what it looks like when she opens it up...and what I did to put pressure on it for now to try and stop the bleeding.





Here's the bandage I did to try and put a bit of pressure on it after we cleaned her off...it has cotton underneath the purple stuff.(forgot what they call it). She can only see out of one eye because I had to entirely cover the other.

Oh, good Lord, not a "cull her" situation by far. It looks like a sty to me -- my sister gets them constantly due to the fact she has to have periodic botox injections in her eyelids for a condition called blepherospasm, or uncontrolled drooping eyelids. A sty can be pussy or bloody, depending on what causes it. The bloody ones often have an ingrown eyelash as the source, so perhaps the goose has an ingrown feather.

Treatment is antibiotic ointment, hot compresses (tea bags are great, the tannin helps a lot), and eye irrigation on a regular basis.

May require some minor home surgery, which isn't complicated except that your patient might not be cooperative. You might need to lance it and see if there is an ingrown feather down there, and if so, pluck it. Or just try the other treatments first and see if it resolves on its own.

You definitely should make every effort to treat before you consider anything drastic.

It also possibly could be some kind of cyst or tumor, but I would seriously consider sty treatment first. IF that doesn't work, then go from there.

This is an EYELID issue, not an EYE issue, so blindness per se isn't a question, at least not now. If it continues, could lead to blindness from irritation or infection of the cornea.

THANK YOU! I hadn't thought of a sty because of the blood.I will try the home remedies first. I think I will try and lance it....then do the treatments after that. I fear that once I lance it though, it will keep bleeding... also, what's a safe antibiotic to use on her eye? I didn't use any yet for fear of causing more trouble.
And why is always the friendliest ones these kinds of things happen to??

As far as the bleeding, if it won't stop, try using a styptic pencil (sold in drug stores in the men's shaving aisle). They sting, but they work.

Thank you, I will. We are about to lance it in a few minutes...I am scared to death! But....she cannot keep doing this or she will be even worse off....so here goes nothin. Will post update later.

Ok...we lanced it..Lots of blood and a good sized clot came out.Also a small black thing...literally looked like a piece of cracked pepper? Anyway, it's still trying to bleed but I put neosporin on it, then a piece of sterile cotton and wrapped her head in vetrap but left one eye for her to see.I wrapped it kinda tight to help it stop bleeding.Put her and Cornelius(her sidekick) to bed early so hopefully she'll calm down.Tomorrow we'll unwrap it, clean it and put new bandages on. If the bleeding has stopped I'll probably just put more neosporin and wrap it back up for another day.It kind of looks like a skin tag on her eyelid. I hope like heck she is ok from this. She is my favorite goose! And I think she HATES me now
I will post her progress on here so others have a reference if they come across this type of thing.I'll take pics tomorrow and post them as well.

Be sure to check it before you goto bed, you don't want it wrapped to tight to cause a new problem to find in the morning.

I did just check it a while ago....and Chloey was COVERED in blood I think it's a blood vessel that's open. We had no choice but to try to cauterize it....I swear...we burned it so many times and it STILL kept bleeding! I think we finally got it down to a small bit of bleeding. She has lost so much blood today I'm really worried. I know she is extremely weak and stressed. I HATE this part of animal husbandry!! I don't even think a vet could stitch it because it goes UNDERNEATH her lid and into the corner
I just hope she lives....I don't care if she has a scar or is blinded or hates me for the rest of her life! I feel so badly for this goose
I'm so frustrated right now ...not enough money for a vet....not enough knowledge to know what exactly to do...guess i have the heart for them but not the wallet.
I have her in a crate inside the house tonight. I have the crate covered with a cloth so nothing will stress her even more.The dog is locked in the bedroom so she can't be too curious...Man, i hope she makes it

This morning Chloey is in a "hospital" brooder and is eating and drinking so that's a good sign. I am leaving the bandage on for another day and forcing myself not to mess with it to give it time to heal.Her buddy Cornelius is hanging around the porch where the brooder is. Keeping up hope she makes it through with minimal damage!

Why don't you take her to your vet???
