Acorns, Acorns, Acorns!!!

If you have a large oak in your yard you probably have noticed that your chickens love the acorns that are cracked open. My ducks are the funniest, back when it was raining here, they would plunge their beaks into the dirt at an angle and tear up the dirt and grass. Then they would but their beaks straight down and pick up some dirt in their beaks and set it down somewhere else. They would do this until they had a sufficient hole. Then they would put an acorn in their hole and walk off to do it again. I have no idea why. They are so funny when they walk around with acorns in their mouth!

Do you have any funny stories about your animals and acorns? Do you feed them to your animals? How do break them open?

We have an oak tree too. I will need to try gathering acorns this fall.

Wow, I'm super excited about this. We have a HUGE oak in the back, and another on the side. This will be our first fall with the chickens, i can't wait to see what they do with all the acorns! I read that a fully grown oak will produce more than 2000 acorns...that's a lot for 3 chickens to play with!

Yeah, about half of mine love them, and the rest are kind of indifferent. Really good to mix little chunks into their feed. They don't even notice and they are really good for them to eat. I heard you can put a bunch in a feed sack, close the end, and hit it really hard with a sledge hammer. Then feed them to the chickens and they get them out of the shell by themselves. I'm not really sure how that works, I just shell them myself then break them up with a hammer.

Goats are the worst about sneaking some when you are shelling.
