Good news! Starting on 2/10, Romy has laid a complete egg a day, now for eleven days, with one exception - she laid an egg early, so no shell, one afternoon.
This thread will, I hope, be useful to someone down the line so I wanted to give an idea of how long it took in Romy's case to get her back on track.
We knew there was a real problem on 1/18, and started her on Neocalglucon. I also added calcium gluconate to everyone's water two to three nights a week at that point. Switched from half and half layer/maintenance to all layer feed.
She started adding shells (just a little thin, but real shells) on 2/10, so that was just over three weeks. Pretty quick, if you ask me.
I am continuing the Neocalglucon - her last dose will be tonight. The calcium gluconate will continue three nights a week for . . . . I don't know how long. I have considered giving her peas with Ca gluconate instead of peas with Neocalglucon as her special treat, since she now watches and waits for her special every evening. I figure this out (a.k.a. make this up) as I go.
I honestly think this is a myth or perhaps an uncommon thing that has perpetuated into a fact. I feed my ducks eggs, the whole darn thing i just stomp on it, i give the chickens shells too.. NOBODY is an egg eater... unless it's been broke open for them they don't touch 'em that includes the drakes and i seriously doubt i have 'special' birds that all know better lolI have been told "NO! you CANNOT EVER feed egg shells!!!!! They will become EGG EATERS!!!" Pretty much like that. So if one is concerned, do some reading, and might be best to add the finely crushed - perhaps even powdered - egg shells to feed.
You are so right GQ, I haven't seen my ducks eating any eggs other than the ones I offer to them and it's crushed up shells, my chickens haven't turned into egg eaters either since they eat the crushed shells.I honestly think this is a myth or perhaps an uncommon thing that has perpetuated into a fact. I appreciate both of you weighing in. I don't want to belittle anyone, but that bit of advice just did not ring right to me. It was from a well-meaning person, and I see no need to set anyone straight. But I appreciate you posting about it here.
La Rome continues to lay fine eggs. And the Neocalglucon is still not done. Maybe one more dose for tonight. It's lasted several more doses than it looked like.
