Hey everybody, we need your help!

We are in the final stages of adding a new feature that will give us the ability to show a special message just to logged-out users, usually lurkers and other non-members. Basically we want to communicate two main ideas:

  • What are the best things for a first time BYC visitor to check out? Which articles, pages, threads, features, etc?
  • What are the top reasons why they should stop lurking and sign up?

We'd like you to identify 5 or 6 of the most popular pieces of content (whether they are articles or forum threads) that we'd like logged-out people to be exposed to first. It can be either articles from the Learning Center, lists of coops, a call to action on why they should join BYC, etc.

We're counting on our members, old and new, to tell us what they would have liked to see when they first visited BYC! We hope we can take all your feedback and condense it into a single message to show to our soon-to-be members who are visiting for the first time!

We look forward to your great ideas!!!

How about something like:

Did you find what you were looking for?
[then a clickable choice of the Forums page, the BST page, or the Learning Center.

And a bit of encouragement to register participate!]

Obviously, I'm an idea person not a design maven.

I've lurked for a year, and got all the information to my questions by searching forums. I obsessed with chicken coop design, and breed research prior to acquiring chickens. I loved the photo banner across the top with the articles for coops, and the seasonal topic.
This site was a wealth of information and i didnt need to sign in- and I was/am grateful for it!. I became a member to respond to a classified but the 20 post minimum is a drag. I feel like I may be missing out because my hands are tied as a new member.
This site is by far superior info for the beginner, with all POV available.
I would be nice to see it available as an APP, as i do all my computing from my iphone these days!! Thanks for doing what you do!!!

I agree with an app :) I would def pay for one just to be able to upload photos.
I found this site by a google image search for Silkie Chicks!!
I think for a first time chicken person a post/note I would love to have had was something along the lines of, 'Are chickens for you' with a list of the best chickens, coops, et for first time chicken parents. Maybe even some 'members say this about BYC's page' and grab a handful of testimonials about the site and what was most useful for them.
For someone with chickens just searching for specific info, a post/note on how many wonderful forums there are for each subject?
I went nuts when I got here and visited every single place I could. Even though I have a coop I loved seeing all the different designs and ideas for big and small flocks.

I think gryeyes has the right idea.

generic welcome

a list of links to the most important forums:
medical treatment (because a lot of people don't find this place until there is an emergency)
raising chicks (because some people do research before they jump in)
coop design (this was invaluable to us)

and then a warm, fuzzy note (old timers, look the other way) about the community and social benefits of joining and participating!

You don't need an app to use BYC from your phone. Just pull up your web browser and bring up BYC. It will recognize that you are on a mobile device. It works great!
