I have an old play house that was converted to a coop. Its 17² ft (how do you get 17² feet you ask? by having a tree go though the middle of course) currently there are 4 chickens in there. There are 3 windows that provide 8 feet of ventilation, but only during the day.
Is that enough? My dad...
is it possibly too soon to get a rooster? i have my eyes on a very cute silkie/Spitzhauben cross that i’ve already fallen in love with, but this is my very first flock and i only have three (almost) 4 month old pullets at the moment, but planning to add some silkies next summer as my cousin is...
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? So I joined to help support my daughters 3 now 8 chickens. Her first bird last spring.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now? 8
(3) What breeds do you have? Buffs 18 months old , Frizzel 5 weeks old and silkie/buff cross 8...
I am being gifted a chicken coop, which is much appreciated, I didn’t know when I accepted the offer it also was coming with 7/8 chickens and a rooster. I have already ordered my 3 Plymouth Rock Barred pullets that I get in May. Needless to say, based off the photo do you think this coop will be...
Chicken Math is s funny thing. One day you have ten or twelve chickens, and before you know it you're nearing thirty or more!
Sadly, it seems like Chicken Math has a form of subtraction...
Why does the loss of one chicken make a whole yard look empty?
I asked a friend this very question, and...
If asked how many chickens, I say "Over a dozen," and that seems sufficient. It's certainly accurate.
After adding a few and hatching a few, my new answer became "Oh, around 30, I think," which didn't seem too bad since I have the space and resources.
Today, I realized that I've been going...
We started with 6 then I *had* to take the kids to the feed store with me and that brought home another 6, 2 of which are accidental meat birds (TSC and their mislabeled bins and employees that have never had anything to do with chickens) so technically just 4 since our 2 Cornishes will be...
Hey y’all. I have three 5 or 6 week old chicks. It’s very possible that two might be roos. I honestly hope not. If that is the case, I don’t want my flock to be down to one, so I ordered a buff Orpington started chick from Mcmurray that will arrive later this week. How do I handle adding her to...
Hi new friends!
I suck at talking about me( kind of ) so I'll just answer the questionnaire template. But I'll be happy to answer any questions you Fine Feathered Friends come up with.
1. Yes I'm new to keeping chickens. I've been at it for a year now.
2. I started with 25 broilers and 6...
We just moved to Edmond from Duncan. We were only allowed 3 hens...well thanks to local farm stores we had roos, which were a no-no. Luckily, we knew several country folk who didn't mind a new roo here n there. We currently have 10 large ladies, 2 bantam hens, and I went to a swap meet and...
Whats the maximum ammount of chickens you guys are able to care for yourselves? And how long does it take to feed/water/clean the flock and the coops? I've heard of some small farms where one person cares for 500 birds , but I have no idea if thats comfortable or if thats extremely close to...
Hello!
I just became a crazy chicken lady (to be fair, I was already crazy) and learned firsthand that chicken math is REAL.
I am married with 3 wonderful daughters ages 11, 9 and 3. My husband has been putting up with my wild ideas for over 15 years so getting chickens was just another "roll...
So, I have 7 three week old serama chicks that are ready for an upgraded brooder. I brought home a small coop that's about 4wx4lx4h with an attached nesting box, and today I plan on installing the heatlamp and some swings :p Three days ago I had one black copper maran egg hatch (she was in a...
Hi Everyone,
Just curious as im starting to want more and more!
How many birds do you have in your current flock?
And How many did you originally start with?
For the longest time I thought y'all were crazy about this chicken math thing. How do you go to the store for one thing and magically double your flock? That wasn't going to be me!
My starting flock was just going to be two chickens. I ordered the coop and hardware cloth. Tuesday, the items...
So. I have 4 two week old chicks currently.
And hubby has agreed to let me get two more this week. So they will be brand new.
I am brand new to this chicken thing (I love it, obviously!) But can I put the new babies in with the older chicks in the same brooder? Or do i need to move the older...
Oh wow... yesterday was a crazy day. I finally have time to post about it. So. It all started with an email from a fellow chicken-lover who knew I was in CT. I clicked the attached link, and up came a Craigslist ad for 3 hens that were 10 minutes away from me. It stated right there in the ad...
Calling all Enfield CT residents, I have wonderful news! Check out this article, I’m sure you’ll be thrilled

I went to Tractor Supply today. I shouldn't have, because...they had Turkens! :celebrate
Chicken math got me! I now have 6 Turken chicks (all different colors/patterns) and 2 free bantams.
My husband is out of town right now
But I couldn't resist them :wee
Somebody help me! Who will take...
Hey everyone, I'm a PA transplant to Oklahoma... Got our first chickens last year, out of 6 we have 2 hens. This year I'm adding quite a few more with hopes of selling eggs & chicks. Currently I have 1 RIR rooster & 2 buff orpington hens. I have silver Laced Barnvelders hatching this coming week...
