Been awhile since I’ve had time to post…but my oldest hen startled me tonight and I gotta tell it…
Four pullets I added are getting big enough to switch them from their smaller coop to Ms Boss’s, her to theirs. It was getting quite in need of serious cleaning inside and rescrewing a few boards...
Is using peat moss a very good idea for my ducks? I’ve heard a couple of pros and cons about it, but my biggest concern is that it may create bad bacteria or cause respiratory problems for the ducks. I do have pretty good air ventilation in my coop, so that may make up for it. Thanks in advance!
Hi all! I'm a major beginner (we got our 3 ~150 day old chickens 1 week ago) and have taken 100% of my guidance from my brother/sister in law. We have a small prefab coop with 2 nesting boxes and a pull out drawer to collect poop under the roost.
I had planned to apply the deep litter method as...
Hello. I have a burning question about the deep litter method, and I have been researching on BYC and many other sources but this particular topic is not showing up. I started using the Deep Litter Method for my flock of 4 (was 5, until we realized we had a cockerel) in a 4'×8' raised coop with...
I don’t know if this is the right section to post this but I hope it is..
I’m not sure how much of a threat flies or maggots pose to guinea fowl or chickens but ever since I placed my guineas outside in their pen flies have swarmed and swarmed. A few weeks ago I noticed maggots in the mud/dirt...
Hi Everyone,
We at Alder Creek are having a blast figuring things out as chicken tenders and it's time to start getting creative with tools and techniques for cleaning and maintenance... We'd love it if you'd share your favorite maintenance/cleaning tools and tricks for coops and runs-- bonus...
Integrating our coop into the corner of our barn last year was the best idea! I love being able to walk in to take care of the girls. And after a couple of hours of work yesterday, it's currently cleaner than my house. 😂
I'm currently in the process of getting a diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis, and I'm starting to have another flare up after a month of relatively easy living. I live in Southeast Georgia (heat index of 100°+ and very high humidity), and I'm constantly getting overheated, which is what I think...
Hey y’all! We have had our chicken coop for a little over a year now and yesterday I noticed some Carpernter bee “scouts” in my chicken yard!!! Our coup is not painted but sealed with some industrial strength wood sealer. Should I still be concerned about the possibility of those pesky bees...
Hi everybody,
I live in the north of Norway, with cold and long winters so the chickens spend a lot of time indoors. I've used wood shavings since the beginning as I assumed it was the only option. I hated it since day one, and I even think I got some respiratory issues because of the dust it...
Hi Everyone,
I bought a lovely coop from a fellow chicken owner that needed a couple of the bottom boards repairs and I found one board was rotted out from termites. I got the board off, but there's still a bunch of them roaming around the coop itself (which the board braced). I wanted to ask...
I started deep litter several years ago using the methods that everyone claims to have had success using. It' didn't work for me, it smelled clumped/matted was a ton of work and didn't look like I was doing my chickens a service by using it. I tried straw first and noticed that it made a thick...
Hi everyone! I moved to Alaska about 3 months ago and my new house has an 8x4 ft coop in the yard with a good sized fenced in run. I have eight Islandic chicks that are one and a half weeks old but we only plan on keeping the hens so hopefully we'll have at least four chickens.
I fully cleaned...
Hello everyone,
For those who use sand in their coop, where do you get it?
I've had such trouble finding it bagged at Home Depot or Menards- its always kept outside and its wet.
Do you have a method for drying your sand before putting it in the coop?
I have limited space, bags work best.
Any...
hey guys!
My run and coop are both on top of a grass area. As I know, it's a matter of time before the grass turns to dirt.
Should I keep the dirt? Add sand? Hay?
Any advice would be great!
Also, when considering a dust bath. I was going to dig a hole, Add DE to mix with the dirt. But when it...
