Hi! I'm new here, and I don't know much about the lives of waterfowl. We live in a neighborhood with a pond that is home to a flock of geese and a few ducks who seem to stick together against the geese. The pond has been taken over by duckweed, so I was out scooping it to try to put a dent in...
Hi,
This is my first post, but I do have thank the members on this forum. We have researched a ton over the past year and we can always find the answer here!
Bear with me, I will get to my questions!
This past year or so is our first year raising a flock. We decided (maybe foolishly) to...
Our silver Appleyards are amazing, and we've had eggs straight through the winter--although not as many as we'll see in the summer, of course. With egg production ramping back up, we're dusting off our favorite duck egg dinner recipes.
Last night we had one of our favorites: Duck Egg Curry...
So, two question:
1. What duck breeds are best for egg production?
2. What breeds make the coolest eggs?
(please state which one your answering)
Hello!
I have a pair of 10 month old mallards. My female has been laying on a clutch of eggs for a few weeks now (not sure exactly how long but thinking about 3 weeks) and I am unsure if they are still alive. She had been doing a great job staying on them and keeping them warm, but we have had...
How soon do I refrigerate them. How long are they good for? My ducks both are female just eat flock raiser crumbles mixed with 25% oatmeal. Do I need to add something now that she is laying eggs? Or change to a new food? Anything else I need to be aware of. This is all new and exciting.
Hi BYC friends!
This is my first hatch and I’m on day 21! I have 9 duck eggs (4 mallards, 5 runner) and they all appear to be moving and progressing as expected. One egg, however, has a peculiar black spot inside. Any thoughts on what this might be (see pic and short video)? I am turning the...
Hi BYC friends,
This is my first hatch. I have 9 ducks eggs; 4 mallards and 5 runners. I candled them on day 5 because I couldn’t wait to see how my babies were progressing. I candled them again today, day 7, and they all appear to be healthy and progressing as they should but one (my...
We have a farm/feed store in Northern California and we used to sell chicken eggs. (We used to sell eggs from anyone who brought them in....long long time ago.) I know that there are some very hefty and strict regulations on the raising/packaging of chicken eggs but I have not been able to find...

Hi Friends,
need a quick advice: To my surprise, my Indian Runner ducks have started to lay recently. Now today i discovered that one of them has build a nest inside with already two eggs inside. We don't want any ducklings in Winter! I have not removed the eggs yet, have read that ducks lay...
Someone told me I would get more replies here than on the duck forum.
I have a duck named Hula who recently hatched 6 ducklings, with still 8 eggs to go. Well, she kinda ditched her nest and the chickens decided to dig around and ruined the nest and buried her eggs. I was able to get all of them...
So, how should I go about handling the ducklings my girl is going to have (they're due in approx. a week)? I don't want to take them all from her since she's been doing all the sitting, but I also don't have the time or space for 10 (or more) ducklings, so I'm going to be rehoming some.
Will it...
Hi, my 2 appleyard ducks have been laying for a few days now, both blue and white eggs. I think one is laying white eggs and one is laying blue eggs as for the first 2 days I had one of each. However for the last 2 days I've only had blue eggs. Is it possible for one duck to lay both coloured...
I have 2 ducks and a drake, all miniature appleyard around 4 months old. Today I have found 2 eggs (the females first ones) and I don't know what to do with them. The drake has been mounting recently so I don't know if they will be fertilised or not. Do I need to wait a bit before candling...
So my khakis have started laying , I’ve noticed the pekins also playing with the ceramic eggs I put in the two corners under the nesting boxes (from the last residents),
My question is , should I box in the two corners and fill it with straw/shavings ? I put a pile of shavings in each corner...
I plan on breeding my cayuga drake to Muscovy females for hinny ducks. I will be using the male hinnies for meat and was wondering if it was worth the effort of keeping the females for eggs. I've heard that they lay more inconsistently and have smaller eggs, but I'm curious about people's...
hi All!
My first post here tho I’ve been lurking for a while! I have a duck egg I found next to my bird feeder 29 days ago. Kind of made a make shift incubator and it’s been developing just as shown on a duck egg candling graphic I found online.
Tho I dare say I’ve been pretty good bout...
My Pekin Ducks, Edith and Archie are about 5 months old. They got married recently, and I am now finding these eggs in their nesting box inside the duck house. The chicken coop at the other side of the run did not have nesting boxes yet as my chickens are only 4 months, and I hadn't built them...
