    Free Ranging

What is considered free range? I have a penned in area that is 50x60 with a coop that has the door open at all times. I also have a pen that is connected to the chicken pen, it is a 100x70. I have only 14 Hens in the area. Is that enough room to be considered free range? Thanks very much!!

    Free range sneaky layers

My free range girls like to hide/lay their eggs. I will watch them and find their spot and then two days later they shift on me and I have to hunt them down again. I have a coop, but two of the girls get really loud and indignant if they are locked in, and since I am in an urban area I can’t...

    Can Cornish X breed?

So I have two Cornish X pullets that have been squatting for 1-2 months now. They haven't laid but my Barred Rock rooster has successfully bred with them many times. I'm wondering if anyone has successfully bred Cornish X because I've read they have bad hatch rates.

12 day old silkie chick originally came out white/cream coloured but is now developing some grey on the wings! It has grown a lot darker within the past few days. What colour will it grow up to be? Mom is a white silkie hen with white parents and dad is a golden partridge silkie.

    Chick integration while free ranging

Hello, We have 10 - 10 week old chickens that free range. They were kept in a enclosed area but once they ate all the vegetation they started flying over so we decided to start free ranging since we have 40 acres of deep woods and we’re in constant battle with the growth we decided let’s have...

    Poison Ivy on eggs?

Some of our free range hens have laid in an area with poison ivy. I’m extremely allergic so trying to figure out how to get to the eggs is one thing but what I’m curious about is will the oil be on the eggshells and potentially transfer to people when they touch the eggs?

Does age matter when starting to free range?

I just moved my guineas/pullets to their new coop outside. Once they get acclimated and comfortable, I want to start letting them out in the yard a little bit. Initially I'm going to use a movable fence around their coop so they don't venture too far and know to go back home when it gets dark...

Neighbor's Chickens Trying to Join My Flock

I'm having an issue with my neighbors flock storming my run and eating like they're starving whenever I let my girls out to supervise free range. It wasn't always like this: a few of the neighbor's hens who were always getting bullied would come down and snack/hang out (I also saved one from...

Suggestions on shrubs for hiding? (Pics)

I am planning to put a coop along the fence in the picture. Also, my yard is pretty bare, and I want to plant some shrubs for chickens to free range, hide and play around. If they can eat off its fruits even better. What would people recommend?

Muscovy feeding, care, and bullying questions

Aloha. I free range five hens of different varieties in my backyard, and about 5 months ago my children convinced me to get a pair of Muskovy ducklings. I haven’t yet figured out how people free feed their birds. The minute my birds step away from the feeder, at least 20 wild birds swoop in...

    How to free-range Guinea Fowl?

Hi all, I have four 2.5-month-old Guineas that Ideal gave me as extra in a chick order in October. I've raised Guineas before and tried to free-range them, but they inevitably either wandered away or got taken by predators. We now have 55 acres in Kentucky (mainly wooded but their run is in...

What's the Optimum Happy Flock Size?

If space isn't an issue (i.e. lots of acreage), how many chickens make a happy flock? I'm not looking for a minimum or a maximum, but rather what is the optimum or sweet spot? I'd like to buy some acreage to plant a food forest. To build up the soil and generate income while I wait for the...
