    Pullets and winter laying..

We have 16 hens (and a rooster) - 6 barred rocks, 6 easter eggers, and 4 welsummers. They were born in August and are about 14 weeks currently if my calculations are right . . . So obviously we're not expecting any eggs yet, but are contemplating the pros and cons of adding supplemental light...

Pullet started squatting. When should i expect her to lay?

This is my silkie/bantam brahma mix Oakley. She hatched on the April 23rd. I believe she should be around 23 or 24 weeks old. I was petting her today and she started squatting. I know that means she'll start laying soon, but how soon should I expect the first egg? A couple weeks? A month? More...

11 of my babies were killed

Yesterday, a group of German Shepherds got into my coop and killed 7 silver lined olive egger pullets and 4 white african guinea fowl that I had been raising up. They just hit 12 weeks and I am devastated. I fixed my fence and fortified it. With that being said, if anyone in Northwest Oklahoma...

    Hello Chicken Friends!

Hi, I'm Cinnaminute! I'm new here but I've been lurking around the forums off and on, reading up on info about chickens. Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? Yes, I'm new to chickens. I have had other birds in my life (Cockatiel, Macaw, Parakeet) so I'm not 100% new to...

Will new laying ladies know where to lay?

We have some juvenile chickens who are gearing up to lay and are wondering if they will know to lay in the nesting boxes? They are free ranging so we don't know if they'll be wild layers or learn from the older hens where to lay. Any tips or advice? Thanks!

Okay so I have a few questions

So my questions are this: 1: why Is my cockerel (6 months old) pecking the back of (only) one of my pullet’s head & back? 2: when will he calm down? 3: can I get him cartrated? If so, will it kill him? 4: what can I give to my pullet & cockerel flock as a treat every now & then 5: my ??? X...

    Chicken math

I currently have 3 chickens - an approx. 18-month-old Bovans Brown called Lulu (used to have 2 until we had a racoon visit...), plus a 12-week-old EE called Jellybean and a 12-week-old barred rock called Pepper that I added earlier this spring. Lulu is not super impressed with the new additions...

    Odd Yolk?

Cracked one of our newest pullets egg this morning. The egg had two yolks. The one on the left appeared normal but the one on the right had a different appearance I’ve never seen before. Any ideas? Is it safe to eat? She has only been laying for maybe two weeks.

Will a cockerel try to mate a pullet?

Pullets are roughly 13 weeks and cockerel is 14 weeks. He tried to mate our hen the other day. She is maybe 6-7 years old? Not sure. But it was a surprise to her. I was about to pick her up so she squatted and the cockerel took to moment. This morning the cockerel tried to (I think) mate one of...

    Help IDing this chicken

Hello, I am a new chicken owner. I went to tractor supply and asked for two Rhode Island Reds, but ended up with two of another breed. I have been searching online and think they may be ISA Browns but I am not really sure. Can anyone help with the ID? They are about ~5 weeks old. If I missed...

Adding a Rooster to my Pullet flock

Okay so I’m lost here because I see so many varying opinions- My flock is 14 pullets, they’re barred Plymouth Rock, buff orpington, and australorp. Thoughts on adding a rooster to a flock of my 17 week old pullets? They’re all just now beginning to lay. When I first got them I only wanted hens...

Chickens taking out the nesting eggs

Okay..so I made an amateur mistake. When we put our pullets into the coop, we didn’t cover up the nesting box area (at the time we hadn’t finished putting the dividers in so I want sure if it mattered) One of my hens (16 weeks) laid her first egg, we found it in the run. So, we put dividers in...

    Hi from Marion Alabama!

I just moved here and live in cow country! I just got some chick's (4) girls and am in love already. 2 are Barnevelders and 2 are blue Plymouth Rocks. I'm trying to tame them but they're so skittish. I've only had them for a few days so I'm hoping they'll warm up to me. I'm happy to be here and...

    Hens needing rehoming

Hello, We are unexpectedly moving and unfortunately can’t bring our flock. We’re looking for a new home for our gals (and are sad about it!). We are in the suburbs of Boston. - 2 7-month old barred Plymouth Rock hens. Lay 1-2 eggs daily even though winter. Started laying at 6 months - 2...

    I won the rooster lottery

Last spring I bought 4 "sexed" day old chicks that turned out to ALL be roos. A hen hatched out two more babies, got two more roos. Finding homes for them took well into the summer and meant hours and hours of driving all over the place to their new homes. BUT. NOW. One of my hens hatched a...

    Hi, I'm New!

Hello all, I have been reading forums from the backyard chickens website for almost a year now and finally decided to make my own account. In April of 2021 we welcomed our first flock--four Barred Rock pullets and two female Khaki Campbell ducklings. We raised all six of them in the same...

My Pullets are nearly 7 months old and haven’t begun laying yet, weather or diet maybe?

Heyo hope everyone’s doing well. Just curious as to why my 3 pullets and also other pullets from the flock haven’t been laying at all but they’ve already reached 6-7 months old? Understandably my older hens have taken a break especially due to cold weather lately and just overall egg productive...

    SOON

My babies aren't babies anymore. They're 5 months. The big boy I've got is dancing around them and their combs are growing in size. They've also been 'fighting' now for dominance in the flock. I'm SUPER hoping for eggs by the end of the month or by mid-February at least. I'm on Egg Watch until...
