Lena dipped her wing, and the fluff frizzed up, which usually happened after she'd been flying through rough air for a long amount of time.
"There were no metal cages. Only metal bars that shot bullets! But the place we lived in was actually remarkably nice, we had a lake, a nice evergreen forest."

"I think you'll be safe here. I haven't seen any two-legs!" Silver said reassuringly. "The reserve sounds like a wonderful place, but . . . why would two-legs shoot bullets at you?" The thought of doing such a thing to a bird who was still laying eggs was unheard-of to her.​

Lena nodded. "We'd learned from experience. As soon as we heard that loud panting noise, we'd run as fast as we could. It took a couple of deaths for us to finally realise what they were capable of."

"Great!" Lena fully relaxed. She could take other animals as predators, but as soon as you encountered a bullet, you were done for. "They think it's a game. Who can shoot most accurately. I've heard some people boasting about how they'd taken down over ten of us in one day. We always cringe at stories like that." She shivered.
