“Hey google, open the chicken door”

and about the constantly re-mentioned thing about just doing it your self what about when you have to go away? Instead of getting someone to come and look after your farm you can just let something that you don't have to pay ;) do it or you can at least make it simpler for your farm sitter.

Not sure would count on auto-doors anyway...read way too many stories about the birds not being as programmable as the doors might be. :D

you could be right but what if you were to use raspberry pi and a camera and view in an app when you see that the chickens are in press button and door shuts
Well, yep, camera for head count then close the door is different than an auto close door.

i guess it all boils down to if you like tinkering with electronics or not. I do so I don't mind working on things and the occasional failure.
Many don't know how and/or can't afford the gear needed.<raiseshand>

Yes you are right just not sure why the are always posting about why we bother and saying we should just do it manually.

Because they don't get the 'playing' part, connect it with the autodoor failures, or are jealous.

I definitely have some camera envy.....and for the controls skills too.
I used to be fairly tech savvy, but am devolving into a luddite.

Well, your camera and controls scenario are kind of 'manual'...
...just technology assisted and can be done from offsite. :D

A door on a timer worries me. What if someone doesn't make it inside on time? Or worse something else goes in before the door closes and then gets shut in with the birds.
As an off shift worker (roughly 3-11) I would love to be able to have a camera to look into the coop. (Head count, good. No masked bandit, great) Then remotely shut the door.
I'm not tech savvy. I need automation for dummies.

A door on a timer works fine, you just have to keep resetting the timer to close the door at dusk. Chickens can not see at night! You will never have one knocking at the door after dusk wanting in because the boogie man is after it. If you have birds that would rather roost in the trees a remote door and camera won't help.

If a predator is in your coop it won't matter if you see it on camera and close the door, your chickens are already dead.
