To insert file:
Use the lower, very right-hand button. Once that's open, select "item" at the top.
After that, you should see a little mountain icon at the bottom. Click that.

Magic wand:
Once the tool is chosen, the lower TOP bar should have a plus and minus sign. Minus deselects, plus selects multiple areas, and "off" selects only one at a time.

Oh. I don't think I can help with BYC thing.
I didn't even know that there was a paint bucket... You might go around and make sure that all of your lines are closed and make a complete object. It will seem out of even the smallest cracks.
