You could, but a hawk and other predators could get through that so easily. Netting is built for strength...worth the price difference to me.

Is the netting raccoon proof? I have a bunch of those around so I wenT with a heavy gage welded wire top. The netting sure would have been a lot easier.

JSVAND5,

How does the turtle do in the pond? Do the ducks' crap hurt it at all? I'd love to do that, put a turtle in there, but I'm scared the water will be too acidic for it to live in... And how do you drain it? Pics? I love the pond! It is so awesome!

We have raccoons too and never had a problem yet, we have a 18" sight barrier around the pen and we have a line of electric wire around it also. And I wouldn't put shade cloth and then chicken wire for two reasons:
1. It might not look too pretty
2. When ducks get frightened they could fly up into it and hurt themselves
Netting gives a lot so if the ducks fly into it they usually don't get hurt. I would definetly save your money and but netting from 3t products.

I have a few Questions but I ask them 1 at a time ;
0ne of my questions is this -
How does the netting hold up with the cold and snowy winters of heavy snow – I live in northeast New England - in Ma.,
and what size are ya'll using . 1” or the 2”

The 2nd. questions is this;

sure it strong for hawks but what about raccoon proof and possum proof , seem they could where I have my set-up come down from the trees and chew a hole in the netting , The Bottom 6’ high will be wirer but not sure if I should us netting for the rest

here my thread Aviary & Run Design for ducks

https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=251069

you can see I place my aviary and it is under some large Oak Trees
As you can see in my pic.'s there 3 large Oak tree that will be going right up through the netting or wirer

Turtles have done fine so far but it's only been a few months. I drain it with a pond pump hooked up to a hose. Then I scoop out all of the leaves and sludge on the bottom.

I use 1" extra heavy knotted and I didnt have a problem with snow and I live in Northern Ohio. We had some pretty big blizzards this year, but it never accumulated on our netting.

We haven't had any problems. I stress that you put a wooden sight barrier on the bottom 2 feet or so. Like a said before, we also ran an electric wire around the sight barrier and we haven't noticed any animal trying to get in.

I live in the country and there no one but me in the back yard most of the time so I really don't want to look at a 2 feet wood barrier , I would like to watch and look at my ducks in there aviary . To me having a 2 ft barriers don't make cents if there not alot of people or movement around the aviary .

as far as electric wire I really don't have electric at this point out there and my chicken and turkey pens are behind the wooden fence behind the duck aviary and don't have electric wire on ther pens , just covered fence runs on the chickens and the turkeys well I have not had any problems with them and there runs are not cover much to larger and big to cover .
