➡I accidentally bought Balut eggs: 2 live ducks! Now a Chat Thread!

Btw I think the predator thing may be more of a BO thing rather than an overly friendly thing. I handled mine some as chicks but not as much as I wanted to but anyway, I used to handle them more and they were friendly but now I really never handle them (but can still catch most) but even so, the BO's are just generally more... stupid and unaware of their surroundings. I hate to say it because I love mine but they are. Sometimes they can't find the door in or out of the run and pace up and down the length; sometimes they get so caught in foraging they don't notice the others have left them there; they're always the last back into the run when I let them free range, etc. They're also very food obsessed. They're great birds and I love them but I think to say oh my friend raised them wrong or to be too friendly or whatever isn't really fair. Again, I barely handle mine and they're still generally pretty unaware. I had a hawk almost get one but didn't (just got feathers) and had my favorite chicken (coincidentally a BO) taken by a hawk this past fall. They're not very aware. And yes, they do try to approach me and the dog. But that said, they do still run from him if he chases them. I do have some pretty flighty Easter Eggers so maybe that helps. They also ran when the neighbor's dog got loose. He managed go grab a Black Australorp but she was fine with very minimal injuries and she was hiding under a bush. I also think chickens are smarter than most people give them credit for. They can recognize up to a certain number of flock members faces (I forget the exact number) so I think that they can learn to recognize familiar pets but still freak out and run over strays, loose dogs, coyotes or foxes, etc. Hence why mine ran from the neighbor's dog but don't care about mine unless he threatens them. And yes the Orpingtons do get underfoot when digging but I don't mind and think it is funny and cute and actually often I flip some dirt or rocks specifically for them. And besides, if they get in the way too much, I just give them a bit of a chase or just be more careful. They're not so stupid that they would be killed by garden tools, imo. You do have to be a little bit more careful maybe but I don't mind that. Maybe others do. But it's not a big deal. And yes they do go on the deck, which my parents hate, but they ALL do that. Not just the BO. And I simply chase them off it. But they don't get to free range much anyway and when they do, I usually watch them now because we've had predator attacks. Speaking of which, it's not really the chickens fault if it's crossing the road. If it was mine, I would figure out some sort of containment system or something. My chickens occasionally try to wander through the woods to the neighbors (close neighbors in back) and I just go out and call them back to our yard. Planning on getting a fence. Can't really blame the chickens for stuff that's not their fault. Idk. My opinion. I do think it is more of a breed thing though than anything. Although the car thing is a bit concerning and it was stupid imo to introduce them to cars and roads but that was the only really bad thing. I like friendly chickens and don't mind the extra supervision and if I couldn't hold my chickens or feed them treats or anything, I would be very upset. But I got mine specifically to be pets. That said, I can't hold all of them and I am fine with that. And I am actually planning on adding some more free range savvy breeds eventually. But that's the other thing, some breeds are just better suited to free ranging. Orpingtons and most of the other heavy, domestic/common backyard breeds really aren't. That's why I'm going to hopefully add maybe some leghorns or more easter eggers or some New Hampshires. Oh and I think it's good they recognize my own cat and dog and family and don't take off but idk. Maybe with a lot of ferals or barn cats around it could be dangerous. We only have one cat who very rarely goes outside anymore and she is tiny anyway. Maybe they could be aware of or scared of pets but not people? That may be the best idea but I do not think being friendly to people is an issue or makes them any less aware of predators. Mine never really wander to the front yard so haven't been exposed to cars.

She is gone.
My last baby is dead.

I am a complete wreck now, I can't stop crying and can't even get up. :hit

She died in my hand. Bobbed her neck, heard some bubbling. I realized too late that she was drowning or something (I was not feeding her but her crop was full). I couldn't clear her airway, couldn't get oxygen in her, couldn't do anything. I was helpless and watched her die.

I feel like scum right now. :(

I'm sorry Cy. You did all you could. :hugs

Wasabi might be a boy, but he's no gentleman! As I was catching up on these posts, he was dragging his doggie bed into a corner and then started twerking on it. I'm pretty sure he's a want bam thank you mam, kinda dog!

That's hilarious! I do have a Chihuahua too, but her name is Antigen.

Lol right!? Didn't think there'd be another Wasabi lol and nice! You choose interesting names lol that's a good thing.
