Today the neighbors across the street came over to see if I was alright. They said they had heard an explosion coming from the other side of the house. I did a quick look around and did not see anything but I had heard a loud sound at the same time. The sound I heard was not nearly as loud as the neighbors description but I was in the house and they were out in the open.

Later when I went to check for eggs, I found the source of their "explosion".

A Big Moose pumpkin that was around 40 to 50 lbs. fell off of the top rail of the north side of the pen and dropped approximately 12' to the ground where it "exploded". They said they had seen birds flying everywhere after the noise.

the birds will clean it up and run to, instead of away next time.

good thing none of them got hit

I must side with @Ursuline Chick about the broody. This leghorn is mothering these two little survivors like no one's business. Bustling around the other hens and clucking softly the whole time. 2 weeks old and still delicate little black things. The other hens either don't mind or have lost interest. Roaming all over. Since she is out of the tractor, she is not tearing the sod out. They lounge under the tomato plants. The not so little bitties hopping through the 2"x3" wire tomato cage. Glad they had a safe zone, but they won't fit in another couple of weeks.

The rain should let up for a couple of days and I'll mow the swamp before the next batch of rain. Dry summer and now drenched.

What does it mean when the tips of the comb turn blackish? Several of the hens show this periodically and then it clears up with no ill effects.

No scabs. The tips turning more black than purple and bruised. Yes, I'll take a picture when I next see it.
Hormones.
Unless....what causes this?
Heart issues or something...but if it changes back to normal I'd guess hormones.

They have already started working on it. If it had fallen in the guinea pen, it would be a different story. They will not have anything to do with a pumpkin. They will circle it with their necks stretched out as far as they can reach and do their this is something strange dance and then finally just avoid it.
