➡I accidentally bought Balut eggs: 2 live ducks! Now a Chat Thread!

It’s still on the higher end of the all flock types, but I really think it was mislabeled bags and supposed to be a chick starter/grower type. In any means, they needed to discount those and bring in new because the bags were super old!
If the feed is that badly outdated, they need to dispose of it rather than sell it to some unsuspecting person.

I agree but considering how old it was, I highly doubt they’d lose the money at all. The place was very “modern hipster” rather than a true farm and feed. They had pumpkins that they had for sale that were rotting because they were left in the rain and sun.

That is true but do you have any idea how high of protein it takes to cause kidney disease in chickens? No normal feeds contain high enough protein to cause problems.

For turkeys, they can start having problems when consistently fed a 40% protein diet while chickens can handle up to 70% protein before having problems.

Too high of a Calcium content will cause problems long before high protein will.
That’s true, but in the end I would rather stay at the lower end (18-20) for daily feed since they get so much more in foraging anyways. Prevention is key.

You have a sweet tooth or two huh?

Lol yup!

 You are going to be up all night!

Nahh, I feel ok now. Well, still a little "high." But when I first ate it I felt weird and sick and really almost shaky immediately lol and for a few hours after.

Wait...that is the amount of sugar in just one piece?

Yup. It was a BIG piece though. I probably could have only eaten half lol

It was labeled for chickens, not quail.

I have not! I still think it’s way too high for an all flock. Too much protein leads to kidney and liver disease.

Mmm nope! ;) Read it again. It says to feed to chicks up until laying.

True, directions say until laying (didn't read that before but title lists 3 stages (chick, growing, laying). But you could probably feed it to adults and just feed more calcium.

Luna got a claw stuck in the blanket but I didn't know it so one of her front legs was like stretched behind/under her, literally nowhere in sight, and I couldn't see it AT ALL despite trying and looking for it so I was getting kinda worried when I couldn't find it and she wasn't moving it so then I was like "where's your leg? Did your leg fall off!? Oh my God!" And got up and lifted her up to check... her leg was there :lau

Then don't feed mealworms since they are 50% protein.
I get it. I know they can handle high protein levels. Mealworms are treats, not most of their diet. We do not start feeding our chicks treats until they are over 11 weeks old just to ensure they have a stable complete diet, at 20%, they can get whatever else while they are free-ranging.

I apologize if I didn’t get that point across. I simply was stating that for a daily complete feed, I would rather be in that specified range, others may do what they please and feed whatever they want. I’m quite over this topic.

I do have a question however, we have a hen who has started laying shell-less eggs (pictures of last night’s egg at the bottom), and as you stated, calcium can be much more detrimental than protein. Would supplementing her calcium to help her shells come back lead to problems faster? We have given our Brahma hen calcium pills to help her shells but this is a langshan hen, and much lighter than the Brahma, and since calcium acts more like a fat-soluble vitamin we aren’t sure if it will cause more damage since she doesn’t have much fat on her.

We do that already with our current all flock feed. Though one of our hens we have noticed is laying shell-less eggs so we don’t think she’s eating the supplied oyster shells. Everyone else has nice firm shells except for her.

Laid last night after everyone was put away in the coop.
