➡I accidentally bought Balut eggs: 2 live ducks! Now a Chat Thread!

Thank you! I’ve been researching everywhere for an answer and everyone says it’s a vitamin deficiency..I’m giving Sav-A-Chick electrolytes and probiotics now. Fingers crossed.

Poor baby! Yes, it was my Rouen that was having seizures. She was so bad that we ended up having to give her injections of b complex vitamins before it would help. Some people can correct it orally, but little Xena was really bad. I'm sry that I am only seeing this now. I sure hope she is doing better by now?

I am so behind on this thread and have missed so much.

Wow that’s awesome! I guess that’s not that weird, people used to get married at like 18 all the time,

My hubby and I got married at 18. Have been married for almost 25yrs so far (our anniversary is this month.)
My kids on the other hand... neither are in a hurry to get married. I'm ok with that.

I don’t have any issue with giving it to her, but I think she had to give it because she wouldn’t eat or drink. Devlyn is drinking and eating still.

Yeah, Xena got to the point where she lost 1/2 of her body weight and wouldn't eat or drink. And we tried everything. Making a mushy feed. Tried dog food. She just wouldn't have any of it. But once she went a longer while without having a seizure (was after she got her first shot of b complex and fluids) then she started feeling better and she started eating on her own. Was still a while before she fully got over the seizures but it was then that we figured out what exactly she needed to get over whatever it was she was going through.

I just realized I haven’t said how old. They’re turning 4 weeks old tomorrow
Xena was 5 weeks old and the only duck out of the 6 I had that had this to happen. I wonder what it is that causes this to happen in some ducks. It seems to be around this age time frame, 4-6 weeks old. Possible genetics, specific breed predispositions, or over bred lineage (i.e. more common is hatcheries)? I would be interested to know.

I keep reading about them finding out that genes affect more characteristics than they thought. So if they turn off one thing it may affect something necessary down the road. Sorta like when they brought in rabbits to australia. No natural predators and big problem.
Seems like whenever we mess with nature there are unforeseen consequences

I agree.
I'm not against science, BUT I don't believe risky things like this should be done before all potential consequences are known.

Yeah, exactly. I agree with both of you. We have no way of knowing if those kids will turn out normal or not down the line. I hope so.

That just seems so early to me but I guess it's not that uncommon. There was a kid when I first went to school in like an orientation thing or something that was married already and I remember being like WHAT!? But now it's not that shocking but coming from high school it was aha

And happy early anniversary!

You've been married longer than I've been alive :lau

I'm turning 25 in March.

LOL! Thanks! My daughter just turned 25 in June and my son is going to be 21 the 15th of this month. I can't believe he is going to be of legal drinking age. :thHe doesn't even drink but still... he could if he wanted to try something.

Lol you're welcome! And wow you had your kids young it seems like? I guess my parents started later aha cause they got married in October 1988, older brother born in September 1990, myself born in March 1994, and little brother born in December 1995. I think my mom was like 30 for DB1, dad I think is a little older. But yeah, definitely hard to believe when younger DB turned 21. Both DBs did drink a little bit in high school and college but being legal is cool. And I can't believe he's gonna be 23, for some reason I was thinking it was gonna be 22 lol and I can't believe I'm gonna be so old lol I don't drink either.

The end of the yr is a busy and emotional time for me and this yr add on health problems to boot. Also it's really the main time that I like to do any baking. Throughout the majority of the yr it's rare for me to bake a lot of sweets but get to Nov and Dec.... that's when I get the urge. I cooked for Thanksgiving this yr and in the honor of my mom (that passed away last yr and who's birthday is in Nov. hence the emotional time) I cook for an army even tho it's just really for a small handful of family. It's exhausting and I love it. The next day, however, I pretty much lay around and do nothing because I am flat out fatigued. But I do it to myself every yr and I will continue to do so because I guess I am just a glutton for punishment. LOL! I fixed a pecan pie cheesecake for the first time and it was soooooo good!

Was only my 2nd time making a cheesecake from scratch. I was proud of myself. We did take our 3 male pekin ducks to be processed. I guess I needed that detachment this first time around. The guy was nice. We didn't watch him do it or anything but he did indulge us and our questions and showed us around the equipment that he uses etc. I tried roasting one of them. It was good but it would've been better had I not overcooked it. I scored the skin nicely and it rendered out the fat nicely so we had a yummy crispy skin.

I am going to try again tonight, going about it a little differently than I did before and definitely keep a better eye on it. Hopefully I will do a better job this time around. We has a scare with one of our Australorps. She was super lethargic, wouldn't get up and come see me. Didn't even want to get up and move away when I tried getting her out from under the chicken coop. Had bad diarrhea. Has been giving us intact shell-less or broken soft shelled eggs. Definitely having some reproductive issues. I ended up bring her in the house because I didn't know what was wrong with her and whether or not it was something contagious. I didn't know if she'd even make it through the night. She pulled through tho. She stayed inside for almost a week while we took care of her. Upped her calcium. I ended up changing their feed from flock raiser to a layena with omega 3 (I think it was?) to make sure they ALL were getting calcium. We have oyster shell out in a few places but I guess she wasn't getting enough so I am hoping the diet change will fix the issues. It being winter isn't helping. I am thinking she mainly had a crop issue. ACV in her water seemed to help her and her stools started looking better after the change in diet. But she is out back with the flock and everyone is doing great. Even the littles. Although I still haven't combined them. Now that I changed the feed I am worried because they don't need the extra calcium yes? Does it affect males in a negative way?
:hugseveryone. I hope you all are doing well.

Fwiw 9 times out of 10 crops issues are caused by something else. Coccidia, worms and reproductive issues are three of the tops things.
