Peppers! I'm going to grow, like, a million of them this year.
Love peppers! We can our own Jalapenos and make pickled salad peppers from banana peppers.

I want to try my hand at growing some red bell peppers again. And cucumbers. I tried carrots last yr but didn't have any come up. I will try some again this yr. Maybe a dif kind. I tried this salad mix last yr that didn't do anything. And I tried spinach, it didn't produce either. Anyone here ever grow asparagus? And I want some watermelons. I had a couple grow but never to the ripen point. I tried to grow crenshaw melons I think they were. I've never had them before. Tons of green leafy stuff but no melons. We tried to make sure by measuring out adequate space for the crops but I still think we didn't do enough. Maybe some stuff got choked out or nutrients got too thin. Idk. We're going to try again and hopefully we will have better luck.
I grow California Wonder green peppers and a really sweet red Big Bertha pepper.

I might have thrown and broke a few old school cordless phones back in the day.
I'd never throw a cell phone though...they are too expensive to replace.
. When I was first married,
I used to save glass jars to throw and break into a metal trash can. Now a rolling pin does the job. :gig:gig

You realize that red bell peppers are simply green bell peppers that are actually ripe?

Yep! My patch is more than 20 years old and a second patch is growing in the lawn from moving dirt from the garden to there. The seeds sprouted and are doing well enough that I can harvest them now.

I'm in zone 6/7. My bed was made from asparagus plants I transplanted from my grandmother's garden.
Nothing better than fresh picked!
Mine is in a raised bed. I top it with aged compost each year. Pick only stalks bigger than a pencil. I harvest for only six weeks and then let the plants grow, bloom and set seed.

I just want to see how being nuts feels like...for just one bite.
I'm diabetic...few carbs!

I don't know why, but I'm really hesitant to grow asparagus. It's my most favourite vegetable. I know it takes a few years before harvest. How exactly do you grow it?

Dig a trench 8 inches deep, spread out the roots cover with several inches of dirt mixed with aged compost. As the plants begin to grow, add more soil until the plants and dirt reach the top of the trench. Let the plants grow until stalks are the diameter of a pencil befor cutting any...about two years. Pick sparingly the first year of harvest.

Super easy. You just pick a place and mark it out, plant the little root boys bits, and water every once and again. Then, if you're like me, eventually you'll forget they are even there until spring when they start growing like crazy. They form a plant that looks like a mix of a fern and baby's breath. I think I only purposely watered mine twice the first year and completely forgot I even planted them.
Also keep the weeds out. Seed starts are very tiny and take longer to get established.

Has anyone tried growing winter squash on a trellis? I'm thinking about trying with a cattle panel hoop.
Butternut squash grows well on a trellis.

If you like asparagus, you have to grow your own!! My nephew loves asparagus. He stopped by when I had a good batch to pick. I started the water boiling, went to the garden, picked the asparagus, back into the kitchen for a quick rinse and trim and then steamed the asparagus for 3 minutes. I melted butter pats on it and a little salt and pepper. He was eating the asparagus within 5 minutes of it having been picked. My nephew's response was "I thought that I liked asparagus. Wow, so this is what asparagus is supposed to taste like!!" The only way it could be any fresher is if I cooked it in the garden. There is no better asparagus than straight from the garden to the stove.

When I used to buy asparagus from a store, I would pick out the skinny stalks but when I pick it from my garden, I want the fattest stalks. They are so good.

Around here, all stores with a garden department will have a selection of asparagus roots available. They will have the directions on how to plant it on the package. It is readily available from any of the many seed companies and will come with instructions.

I originally planted Mary Washington and Jersey Giant. Later I added Purple Passion. Now most of my asparagus is hybrids that grew from the seeds produced every year.

I planted the asparagus in its own bed. It gets watered with the rest of the garden. Since I am on a sand dune and sand does not hold water, it gets watered every two to three days during growing season. I fertilize it annually with azomite and some 16-16-16 fertilizer.
Yes, what R2elk said!

I am not a huge asparagus fan but my hubby loves them. But I am a super picky eater anyways so it's not saying much. Well, we ended up going out to eat one day at this Korean BBQ place. You pick what you want from their menu and they cook it at the table in front of you. One of the appetizers was asparagus cut in about 2in bites wrapped in some kind of marinated beef. It was actually pretty good. I surprised myself by liking it.
I just remembered... I like pickled asparagus in a slice of ham smeared with cream cheese. I haven't had that in years. Now I kinda want some.

Pickled okra is good too.

I chop up some bacon, get it nearly fried and add chunks of asparagus for about a minute. Then I scramble eggs over it all and melt cheese on top.
