➡I accidentally bought Balut eggs: 2 live ducks! Now a Chat Thread!

@BantyChooks
Thinking of you, Batty. :love
Crazy Lady bought some chicken feet stockings because she thought I would like them. Why in the world would she think that? :lau

Made me think of yours in your incubator article. We got a good laugh. She did surprise me.
Photos! We need photos of your feet in those chicken socks!

Oh, yeah! I can honestly say that after the first brooding of ducks indoors, I was done with them. So gross. If indoor was my only option, I wouldn't hatch any birds, least of all ducks. The right setup is crucial. If it's all outdoors and you have the right climate and habitat for them, they are easy peasy. It is sunshine and rainbows, though... it's just that the sunshine is made of poop, and the rainbows are made of poop water.
I will also say that I have three ducks laying right now. They started about three weeks ago. They have no supplemental light and are all at least four years old. What cool animals:love
I will say, Delilah our Cayuga, has been a fantastic layer. We went about a week and a half this winter without getting any eggs from her and the rest she layed except for some off days. Better than our chickens who we should be getting 20+ eggs from instead of 7.

Cayugas are amazing layers. I'm pretty blown away by that aspect. Now, if I could get them to shut up...
I'm down to six hens and three pullets. One pullet is laying, not sure which one (light brown egg) but I'm betting an EE. Only getting about three eggs a day.
Two of my laying hens disappeared. Found one feather pile of my favorite EE hen, Lucille. Location seems like a hawk got her. No sign of the Bantam hen. I swear, if she shows up with babies in a couple weeks, I dunno what I'll do with them all. In all likeliness, hawks got her too.

Ruger is making progress, slowly but surely. He was able to bend down a bit today, and bend his neck to the side. Still whining when bending down but not when lifting his head up from sleeping.
He even played with the other dogs today!
Good to hear. Did you say you thought it was his neck? I can't remember :hmm

Ditzy was loud, and proud and probably why the hawk knew where she was when she got eaten. Delilah is pretty quiet. Dottie (Black Swedish) is basically Ditzy brought back to life, and Dippy is basically Delilah cloned.

Yeah it is his neck. We’re guessing it was a pinched nerve or a slipped disk..maybe even just a pinched muscle since he couldn’t bend it.

I agree with you though!
I’m not saying they get sick, honestly our ducks and goose are the healthy things we’ve had. Their poop does compost down nicely, but man not having the right set up makes it dreadful. I would love to have a little pond for them and their own coop but it’s not feasible currently. I’m also letting KDog know that it’s not all sunshine and rainbows either for ducks, especially if they have to be brooded inside. (Hatch them under a broody chicken and it’s awesome!!)

I decided after the chickens I am never brooding inside again lol they were inside for like 3 weeks and that was enough. Never again lol

They're a fine idea if you have electricity down in your field, but I don't. Not enough sun during the winter for the solar units to work either.
The ducks are lucky in winter. The creek freezes over, but I stomp it open for them :)

Ohhhh okay. Always forget not everyone has electricity cause our coop is really close to the house so we just run an extension cord from the garage.

And wow those are lucky duckies for sure!!

Ducks need to swim no matter the temperatures. It’s how they keep themselves clean and healthy.

Ahhh okay. I wasn’t sure cause I know Metzer and some other sites I saw said they don’t need water to swim in, just water deep enough to clean their beaks/nostrils, and that swimming water was messy so that’s what I based that on. But I kinda thought not providing a water animal with water was kinda cruel. But I can see where it would be messy for hatcheries with very large numbers of birds.

Never brooding any animal inside again lol

And ducks seem awesome but so messy and smelly and everything is wet and soggy all the time. :sick

They seem cool but idk.

Mine are slackers. I had one start up i think late December or early January and had one laying until a couple weeks ago. Or actually, like last week lol now I have 3 of 7. Slackers.

Yay!!!

Thinking I will not get a Cayuga then since both of you say how loud they are lol

And sorry about your hens!! Hawk took my favorite hen too a little over a year ago (fall 2017).

I’ve had good luck with acupuncture in those type scenarios but it was diagnosed by a vet and they recommended the canine acupuncture person. I can look for her name if you are interested.

They had Cayuga ducklings at the farm store I was in yesterday. Soooo hard to resist!

I’ve been doing some pressure area massages to see if that helps him at all, and to find where he’s sore but honestly I get no response from him. He’s terrible with needles. He did wake up this morning and was able to bend and turn his head.
