➡I accidentally bought Balut eggs: 2 live ducks! Now a Chat Thread!

Quail poop and duck poop are very different.
I almost died cleaning up after just two balutties.
It was nasty.

Sounds absolutely disgusting.

I respectfully disagree, though your argument is sound if you don't have the right setup and are comparing them to chickens. If you brood ducklings outside, a secure grow out pen, and have a good landscape for them (say, a little creek and pond), they are the easiest animals ever. I also love how much they poop. I clean out their pen every spring and apply all that good stuff directly to my garden. Their poo isn't hot like chickens so you don't need to compost it for a year before using. Plus, I've literally NEVER lost one to illness. Not one. Not even a duckling.

Yeah, I would be comparing them to my chickens. Lol and we don’t have a pond for them but I would make a kiddy pool I think but seems like they need a big pond?? We do have that one in spring. And one in the woods I’m sure they would find lol I think free ranging would maybe make it easier? That’s interesting about not needing to compost it. That is good.

We just have a small pond liner that is flushed daily during the summer. It does the trick in the dry months. A kiddie pool also works. Banty is right, though... If you deal with freezing temperatures and ice for any real portion of the year, it just wouldn't be worth it.

Oh, it's still worth it. You just swear a lot more.

Like a hard pond liner or the rubber/soft type?

And yeah, we get snow and ice and freezing temperatures. Although this winter has been pretty minor. And I am thinking I could just not give them a pool/swimming water in the winter?? And heat the drinking water. And/or heat/deice a pool.

LOL

Lady, only those lunatics that are willing to haul water are going to agree that it's worth it. Or maybe some rich person with a heated duck pool. Hmmm, now that has my wheels turning.
Well, I'm hauling water anyway. I just haul a lot more because of the ducks.

They'll get their swim water no matter how hard you try and restrict it. It might be nicer if you can give them outdoor space that isn't in front of the door to splash their liquid ice.

Hard pond liner. Just a plastic one. People always getting rid of them for free :)
Yes, you can just give them drinking water.

Ummm stock tank deicers, bird bath deicers, or even pond deicers, are all cheap, affordable and work to provide an ice free duck pond or water source :p also I bought a heated pet bowl for my chicken waterer for winter. Best thing I ever did lol I got sick of going out every couple hours or more to dump an ice bowl and refill it only to have to go back out there almost immediately. Of course, the open bowl is kind of annoying, they get it pretty dirty pretty fast, so I usually dump it every few days or once a week anyway (or sometimes more often. All depending on how dirty it is) so that is a little annoying but a lot less annoying than every few hours. Soooo nice lol I did also buy a stock tank deicer a while ago to use with my 5 gallon bucket and horizontal poultry watering nipple system but I never used it. Not really sure why. I think I worried it would be too big/powerful for a little 5 gallon bucket or I may have broken it. Idk. But the heated water bowl is the best thing ever lol but of course ducks would probably make it sooooo disgusting so fast.

Why are you hauling water? You need some stock tank deicers or heated buckets :p

Huh, that’s unfortunate lol and yeah I think I’d put it by the back so I don’t slip going into their pen lol

Nice!! We currently have one of those, gotten for free, but I am planning on using it for the fishies lol
