I take a lighter to a birthday candle while holding it over the egg?

Light the candle, then hold it over the egg so the wax drips onto the damaged part. About 3-4 drops should be enough.

A few drops of melted candle wax will seal that up. Birthday cake candles preferably, the wax melts at a lower temperature.
