➡I accidentally bought Balut eggs: 2 live ducks! Now a Chat Thread!

Well I did!! 25 is old to me lol

I know you’re not! You’re still young and hip! But you’re still older than me lol

Okay you’re young and hip but then you go and say things like that.... :lau

Btw, don’t worry, cows are expensive and smelly and need a barn and I don’t actually want them lol

Oh wow

Wow that’s cool. Reminds me of this. :lau

I first saw the purple one but I think the longer FB one must be the original and maybe someone stole the story? But tbh the shorter one is way funnier. :lau

And then I found this one while trying to find the one I had seen and this is really cool tbh.

Osprey. We have lots here.

Those stories are amazing. Crows and ravens never cease to amaze me with their intelligence

They really are, aren’t they!? I am always amazed by them too. I especially love the one about how they watch over them and brought the lens cap back. I couldn’t believe it.

That is so cool!!
I think i'll start feeding crows. Sounds lucrative! :clap

Catching up but going to respond to these....
Out of curiosity, how do you brood so many at one time? Or will some of them be sold after hatch?
Even brooding 7 stressed me out!

@NanaKat I'd like to know what you do for a brooder setup too. I went crazy and set 56 eggs, followed by another 42 a few days later. I'm hatching them for a sale, but still need to accommodate them until then, and if they don't sell.

When I hatch in large numbers, I use a cabinet brooder with a wire floor in my hen house brooder room. It has legs and is waist high....easy to access chicks and inside by a lift door. It is 40 X 36 inches with a socket for a light bulb and tall enough for a gallon waterer and a 3 pound capacity feeder.
I also have several of those 24 X 26 X 10 inch electric brooders purchased from a poultry supply house.
When I hatch small groups, I use a brooder light suspended over a big plastic tote that I cover with 1x1 welded wire. I put wood shavings in the tote on top of a rectangle piece of fabric cut from an old t-shirt....makes it easy to pull the corners up to dump the soiled shavings into a five gallon bucket for the garden. Rinse the fabric in a bucket of water and toss it into a diaper pail to wash later if you are in to recycling.

One of my Australorps that I thought was thinking about going broody is still thinking about it. :barnie She sat in the nest box for almost 3 hrs before I realized that she'd been in there that long. So I went out to collect the 2 eggs that happened to be under her so she didn't have anything to sit on. She pouted and came out of the nest box lol. I picked her up and checked out her belly and yeah, her belly was pretty bare and smooth. I told her that I didn't want to let her have babies because I already bought babies and don't need any more. She's not happy but she'll get over it. I'll keep an eye out for her just in case she decides to sit in a nest box a little too long that way I can shoo her away. :idunnoHubby doesn't think Bowie is getting the job done effectively anyway. He thinks he is too small and the girls are too big. I told him they aren't THAT big. :lau
Give her some fake eggs in a brood cage and put your new purchased chicks under her at night when they arrive. Give her a few days to bond with the chicks and let her raise them.
I do this with a few of my broody hens every year.

Wild birds are so interesting.
I love crows too! Where we used to live I had a flock that would come to my call for the deli leftovers I brought from work. I really didn't have to call bc they would anticipate and watch for my arrival. Arriving home one day when I had neglected to bring food for a few days, a crow flew slowly over my head from behind, close enough that I felt him comb his toes thru my hair! :D I went inside and got them something from my fridge. They have an uncanny ability to train me!:lau

Now we have verified that a horned owl is nesting across the street. I spotted the shape of the owl on the nest - the ear tufts give the appearance of a cat. I have been hearing it for weeks. I love the owls but not so keen that the nest overlooks my pigeon loft.

Some time back I saw a video of a crow spearing eggs in a chicken house nest, fly to a hay bale and eat the contents of the egg.
Also have owls nesting across the road in some timber....hear them every night when I go out to coop up the ducks.

Now I need a pet cow :lau
There are several breeds that are miniature...

Wait who is Kansas? Prairie???
