They both sound like awesome dogs! But yeah, they definitely need a strong/alpha handler. Which he definitely is and is good with dogs and has them trained really well but yeah.
I think maybe the male is just more aloof with strangers? And I haven’t really been around him very much whereas the other I was around more.
Yeah, I think maybe their old dog was just more of the affectionate to everybody type? Maybe because she was female? Or just her personality? Or she maybe liked me. Whereas I think the current one is more reserved with strangers and protective. Maybe because he’s male. Idk.
Surprisingly female Ridgies are better problem solvers than the males. The males can be aloof also...depends on the bloodline and how they are socialized as pups.
We don't allow rude behaviors. No jumping, bumping or licking. The crotch sniff seems to be a standard RR behavior.

Once you are recognized as family, both males and females will pretend to ignore you until you make the first effort to engage, then game on.
Ruby will stand by someone's side waiting for a back scratch or pat and then greet the person. If you ignore her, she will walk away and ignore you the rest of the visit.
Lily will greet face to face and any one who pets her finds her close enough to touch. She will often sit on you foot to be close.
Both girls stand guard and make great arm rests.
Oh yeah, to be clear, I don’t tolerate that type of behavior with me!! Like if I got one, they would never be allowed to jump up or plow into me like that. I train it out/discourage it. But it’s just they have a much more physical play style with other dogs than some breeds. Some of it is definitely their nature but I think they can be trained to not be physical and crazy. ... Never tried to train it out with dogs.
Big breeds do have a serious need for training in human etiquette! It must be diligent and consistent. Our girls learned very quickly and look to see if they are being watched being good.
When they play it sounds like roaring. And run...my gosh! Their endurance and stamina is boundless.
RRs are both scent and sight hounds. When they are working they are tireless. They don't fetch. You threw it, you go get it....I'm not wasting my time getting that for you just so you can throw it again.
Besides the RR, I've had Chihuahua, Basset Hounds, Dachund, poodles, Australian Shepherd, German Shepherd, Lab and Catahoula. Loved them all. The RR are definitely more challenging.
