➡I accidentally bought Balut eggs: 2 live ducks! Now a Chat Thread!

Muscovy's are really nice to own!

So I’m working the municipal election today.....slooooow day. And how do you think I spent the down time? Yep, researching DUCKS that might work well on our farm. :barnie

I blame @KikisGirls if I become a mother duck to some muscovy ducklings.

So I can't beat this urge.. I must do it. Seeing @KikisGirls and some others new and soon to be homemade incubators have pushed me to do the one I've always wanted! A Deep Freezer incubator! Sadly my relatives deep freezer just went out, but before I could move it to my house in a couple hours, some one stole it out of their front yard off their porch! So now is even badder news.. I'm going crazy! I almost bought a brand new deep freezer just to turn it into a incubator! I'm going to haunt CL for a while!

Upright Freezer if I can find one lol !

Tell them next time to put it by the road with a "FREE" sign. It'll sit there for a week.

But off the porch?!? That sounds like a bad neighborhood. Or a good neighborhood who knew it was broke and hauled it to the dump. But those would ask nicely.

Heard a story of someone getting a new frig and tried to give the old one away by putting it by the road with a "free" sign. After a week, they changed it to "$100" and it was gone in an hour. LOL. People are funny.

They live in a nice city neighborhood where the entire street is nothing but our family except one house across the street from them. The house across the street is a family friend but likes to take our stuff we place outside thinking its scrap or garbage. He never asks just takes. I'm going back to my family's street tomorrow and I'm going to try to ask for it back. If not then offer to trade him a broken stove and washer for one of his old fridges in his back yard. I'll let you know how it goes tomorrow!

Will the broody take the extra chicks if they all hatch around the same time, or will she be like "wait how did I get twice as many chicks as I had eggs?"
I slip extra chicks under the hen's wings at night. I like to hatch and wait until the evening to move them. That way the chicks already know about chick feed and the water container. The hen is usually willing to adopt the incubated chicks.

I finally caught up! I love this thread! @KikisGirls I can't wait for Thursday!

I would guess yes also, however it's a guess. Was hoping someone has done this before and knew if the hen would take in extra chicks?

I had a silkie brood 3 eggs and 2 days after she hatched them, we snuck about 6 more under her during the night. No problems at all. Tried again about 5 days later with two more, and she rejected those too. It seems that at some point they'll "bond" to their bunch and don't want any more. But those first 8 were hers. (FYI, Fuzz maybe weighs 4 pounds total).

Also, I read that a hen can hatch 12 eggs of it's own size. So, if a banty, 12 bantam eggs. If full sized, 12 large eggs. Adjust accordingly for mixes.
