Too funny. City kids didn't know that a chicken couldn't swim.OMG sooo cutehow many did she hatch?
Love the girl in the banana tree, she looks like my Oreo (who is a very sweet girl)
Of course, you know I have a story to tell:
A couple of weeks ago DD had a swimming party at the house. DH had the hens running around in the back yard. The boys came running out of the house ( the girls were already in the pool), Mable the hen was standing by the pool watching when the boys came running out and scared her. So not knowing how to get away, jumped into the pool. Everyone was cutting up about the hen swimming in the pool when DD started yelling that the hen couldn't swim. Everyone rushed to get poor Mable out and she proceeded to peck and bite them. DD swam over, picked her up and placed her on the side of the pool. The kids were very surprised that Mable didn't attack DD.
Mable just flapped the excess water off and with head held high went into the coop for the rest of the afternoon.![]()
How big is your coop? I set up a stair step roost that is a 4' X 3' box with three 2" X 4" X 4' roost boards elevated at 2', 18" and 1'. There is plenty of room for the birds to choose a roost without crowding or pooping on the others. The box contains the poop until I clean it out.Too funny. City kids didn't know that a chicken couldn't swim.
Leghorn hatched 4 out of 8. Looking at combs at 2 weeks, looks like we got 2 boys and 2 girls. 2 didn't complete absorbing the yolk and didn't survive long past hatch. 1 non fertile and one got broke in the nest. Probably from another hen trying to lay in the same nest. Messy, but early in the sitting.
The one in the banana is a cockerel. They've all decided that is where to roost. I pluck them and deposit back in the tractor. Dominique heritage. He's one of the 3 remaining cockerels from the incubator meat attempt. 40 set, 23 hatched, 10 boys & 13 girls. Looks like I was right at first sexing attempt.
Coop is too small for all these and the layers. Trying to modify the coop without having someone get pooped upon. Other option is another coop, which I'm not thrilled with. We shall see.
4'x8'x4' - I was planning on a small personal entourage of egg layers, 3 short years ago. Then meat happened. Chicken math. Who'd a thunk it?!?How big is your coop? GET IT!!!This pops up on my FB Marketplace. I wonder if you could turn it into a brooder or quail cage? Yes the back has some cutouts for plumbing etc. Just needs to be tweaked, right? Forget the vanity top. Just frame out with hardware cloth if doing a brooder or put a simple roof on for weather. Tweak the front doors with HC panels for ventilation. Paint or stain. So many ideas. I think I have a problem lol.
