In case you missed it, a rooster killed his elderly owner in Australia:

This is Insane! Maybe someone should write an article about protective chicken gear siting this as a proff of its importance. I havent ever seen one like that, article or story. I often tend to my birds in shorts and rubber slippers(cant stand the thong on a flip flop.) I am aware they could peck me but wasnt aware that it could be that dangerous.

Only if you are thin skinned.

Or they are vicious (with great big fangs), like the fabled sabre beaked chicken of lore. Highly carnivorous. Apex predator type thing. Tiny arms. You have to hold still to get eaten.

Truth of the matter, the rooster was probably trying to grab the worm on her. Rather unfortunate turn of events there.

The teenagers were thrust into the coop for the first time last night. Good news! Everyone survived. I was out there at last light putting several on the roosts and first light opening the door before the old ladies knew the young ones were in their boudoir. This will prove interesting. Yes, I gave up on the mobile coop in light of recent events.

Let me tell you, it takes balls of steel to stare down an aggressive, x-large Australorp rooster when you've forgotten to wear shoes outside...

@RUNuts I agree. It is horrible and tragic but they keep calling the rooster aggressive and saying he “attacked” her leg and all that stuff and quite frankly, knowing even just a little bit about roosters and rooster behavior, and more about chicken behavior in general, that really does not sound like an attack. They just said that because she died, which is tragic, but I think it’s like you said, he thought the vein was a worm. Especially since it was only one or two pecks and presumably he realized it wasn’t a worm and stopped. Because if he was attacking, he would have flown at her feet first and she would have spur injuries, big cuts, etc. that wasn’t an attack. Just a tragic accident.
