I don't have one of the table mats, but my Grandma Viola would crochet four of the hot pads together and then crochet a decorative edge around the square.
She also made a bigger frame by hammering evenly spaced finish nails into a square wooden frame. Then for loops to fit the larger frame, she cut up our cotton t-shirts and sewed the fabric back together to cut the loops. Have to pay attention to the amount of stretch needed. To get the colors she wanted, she used Rit dye.

I use Cotton, Cotton Blend & Wool Yarn if not using the Cotton Loops, I tried cutting up my own fabric, I made a huge mess with that.
These are my current looms that I'm using.

I do plan on making my new loom like you described, just hadn't gotten a round tuit yet....
Here's the pieces I plan on including in my bedspread!

I could attach several for placemats, I just need to make one to add to my etsy listing. In my spare time, maybe during this flood of rains of biblical proportions?

The car in front of me in line at Starbucks just paid for my drink.

This is the second time this has happened to me recently.

I did the same for the car behind me. I also told the little girl at the window to keep track of how many people continue to pay it forward because tomorrow morning I expect a number.
She said it actually happens all the time that people always do this.

He's been really good lately.
I've got a goat that wants to play with me by pushing me... I've been letting Puckers down to the animals loose to either distract the goat or come chase him off if he pins me. Puckers hasn't tried to eat any of the birds or goats. He's finally starting to come into his own.

I'm so sorry. What a life.. 18 years!
I hope her passing is peaceful and that she is able to show you how thankful she is for her life with you.

Oddly, I'm not overly attached to this girl even though she's very attached to me.
Someone asked me to look after her for a little while when she went to stay with her mom while on mat leave. She never came back for the cat. She guesstimated that Baby was about 8. OMG she was obese! She's a small cat and must have weighed at least 13 pounds! Her stomach dragged the ground. She's always been very moody and a bitter. I've had her for 10 years now. Just in the past month or so she's lost so much weight that her bones are sticking out. I think she's about 3 lbs now.
