I use Cotton, Cotton Blend & Wool Yarn if not using the Cotton Loops, I tried cutting up my own fabric, I made a huge mess with that.I don't have one of the table mats, but my Grandma Viola would crochet four of the hot pads together and then crochet a decorative edge around the square.
She also made a bigger frame by hammering evenly spaced finish nails into a square wooden frame. Then for loops to fit the larger frame, she cut up our cotton t-shirts and sewed the fabric back together to cut the loops. Have to pay attention to the amount of stretch needed. To get the colors she wanted, she used Rit dye.

I do plan on making my new loom like you described, just hadn't gotten a round tuit yet....

I could attach several for placemats, I just need to make one to add to my etsy listing. In my spare time, maybe during this flood of rains of biblical proportions?
