➡I accidentally bought Balut eggs: 2 live ducks! Now a Chat Thread!

I have tomato plants sprouting from last years plantings! I didn’t plant any this year.

I definitely want some of those dwarf sunflowers though :clap

I took some seeds from one of our female persimmon trees a few years ago and planted a bunch of them. Several lived for a year, lost a few. I now have 2 that have been in my kitchen window for about 4-5 years. I think I finally killed them :(
Tomatoes will re-seed if you leave a few on the vine at the end of the season. My mom used to call them "volunteers". I always plant a variety so I'm forever hopeful for something unexpectedly awesome to come of it but it always ends up just like one of the previous year's plants. I guess tomatoes like to self-polinate.

BTW, I have an abundance of dill which I haven't planted for years. Lots of seeds will overwinter and then sprout at an appropriate time in spring. But, not always. A late cold snap killed my repeating cilantro.

Cool. I totally need to try this. Did you overwinter the sprouts inside your house?

Not at all. Some will sprout too early in the year and die. Some will sprout just right and thrive and some will come later. Just go with it. It all depends on weather. Like Goldilocks. Whether is it too cold or too hot or just right! Nature plants and the seeds decide when to start the race. Also called a staggered starting to make sure something lives.

My avocado tree :hitI grew it from a pit of an avocado that I ate one day. It was about 2 feet tall, a year old, and had lots of leaves. Then one leaf fell off, then another, every 1-3 days another leaf would fall off. Now it is just a stick. It is not recovering. I posted in the gardening forum on BYC and followed any and all advice I could get. It was doing so well for so long and then it just stopped :hit

Also virtually all my strong looking little sprouted sunflowers have vanished. I don't know if they withered away under the sun or got nibbled up, but virtually all gone.

There is lots of growth in my garden box. I'm not sure what's edible and what's weeds at this point, it all looks much the same :th

The ducklings that were meant to grow up with @KikisGirls balut babies (since living vicariously through her hatch wasn't enough for me) are now big and strong and officially moved in with the adult girls. I have put the drake in jail for awhile because he was still refusing to play nice. We may try putting them back together soon, but I think even the big girls are enjoying their break from the drake some days.

and Miss Sunshine is virtually back to normal. I don't know what was wrong with her. Sick, heart attack, or maybe she just suddenly has the will to live again. I don't know! but she begs for breakfast and dinner and I don't have to cook her eggs anymore and she even wants to go on walks sometimes.

and I acquired a nice pellet gun through a friend...

No clue about the avocados. I wind up killing them all too. 5 sprouted, 2 have died.

Sorry to hear about the sunflowers. I was hoping you would get some nice big ones to enjoy. Mine are starting to fade and are shadows of their former glory. So short lived, that it was. They are yellowing and drying. Sounds like another planting is in order for you and the fall.

The dogs that were formerly puppies, still have not found a home and broke through my repeated attempts to keep them out of the area formerly know as "the kitchen garden". Now known as the path of destruction. Gone are the happy onions, perky peppers, lanky lettuces, colorful collards and misery mustards. Wasteland. Desolation. The plains of Mordor look better with its smoking slag heaps. Puppies probably caused that too.

Yea! Ducks! We like ducks. Yea! Ms. Sunshine. Glad to hear she is feeling much better. Yea! Pellet gun. Never reveal your source. <wink, wink> How is your aim? Will you mount your first vole? Or put its head on a pike as warning to all others?

Last year we had volunteer basil. I miss it!!! We have a few that have returned from seed, but they are not as vigorous as last year's basil. I've only tasted, have yet to harvest. I should transplant some to the back garden and spread it around. I HAD planned to do that in the kitchen garden....

@RUNuts sorry about your veggie garden. I know I would have cried and then lashed out in a ball of fury.

How many "puppies" are left? I thought most had homes lined up.

If I put a vole on a pike I think that's just hawk bait. My cat has not brought me any live gifts since I got the pellet gun. The other critters have been keeping their distance. My husband likes the idea of sniping from the roof plus it's a safer shot down into the ground, less worry about things like ricochet and windows. We'll see how it goes. We have not had success yet.

My crazy neighbor is selling her house. Any of you wanna be my neighbor?

Neighbor sure! Come on down! I'm not going where the earth gets dandruff every year.

4 puppers. Yes, we had 3 placed. Then the cute factor faded and they backed out or sanity came back. One placed, DD and fiancé took one. I have 4 destroyers and momma left. THIS ISN'T MY PROJECT!!! Crazy Lady isn't holding up the bargain...:he

Start practicing! You wanna be ready for the big day!

On a different note, the EEs are growing! Look like entirely different birds now. Skittish as all get out even though I'm hand feeding the greedy little pullets. 6 weeks old and I'm pretty sure all girls. I'm waiting for pictures.

@Ursuline Chick - how is that chick feed tasting? You eat it like cereal? Is your little one a pullet?

Skittish is not necessarily a bad thing. They just won't make cuddle bugs. But I don't like chasing them down either. We shall see. I do need to spend more time with them.

Yep, I had assurances that I wouldn't be finding puppy homes. SML.

On a brighter note, the squash vine borers are a spring phenomenon so fall squash should be a winner! Replant in August. On a bad note, I only have one pepper plant producing.

Waiting on who/what?
:pop

Confirmation. They are 6 weeks and looking good to me. I'd rather wait & be definate.

Pretty birds. Yellow girl is pretty. As they all are. Striking bunch of chicks.
Fine meanie.
I'll wait, I guess.
Like I have a choice.
