Bought daughter 4 new tires for her car after she had nail in her tire. OK, it's time.
Battery died in my car on Friday. Found the truck had a flat tire on Friday. Bought new battery after auto store CONFIRMS bad battery. 6 years old, OK.
Saturday Daughter gets internship offer! Yeah!

It's only for 6 weeks and would look GREAT on resume. Yeah!

Monday AM
One of the 4 out of original 8 starting eggs pip. Yeah! Go to work anyway. Aww.
Fix flat. Get NEW tire. Old one is less than 1000 miles. Under warranty. Meh.
Put battery in car & discover car won't start. That means the starter is bad and battery was good. Crap.
Get home and check chicks.
#1 killed by mother? First time mother. Pecked to death.
#2 fluffy little chicky.
#3 shrink wrapped in crushed shell.
#4 pipped.

Bring #3 in. Guessing mother crushed shell after it pipped??? 60% of shell gone. Use oil to loosen dried membrane. Mal positioned with head in wrong end between legs. OK. Help the little one. Get membrane off and doesn't look like finished forming. Crap. Not seeing yolk, but belly ain't right. Return to mother to finish. Hope that one makes it.

Daughter gets official job/internship offer. Start next week. "Are you in Texas right now?!?" So planning what she needs for 6 weeks.
#1 A .45. etc.

Options:
#1 Pull all 3. Put in brooder with heating pad. Raise with 1.5 week old meat chicks. Swear off broodys. Especially Leghorn broodies.

#2 Leave with Leghorn. Still in coop with flock. Can move all to tractor for 2 weeks until meaties out grow other tractor.

Expect to lose #3. Just a feeling. didn't look good. Not really moving. Unsure how long the shrink wrap was.

I guess we have no idea how long the chick was in the shrink wrap, is it breathing? If you will be home tomorrow you may want to help said chick finish hatching, what's the belly problem? The other two I would try to let the broody finish hatching. Perhaps there was something wrong with chick number one and your broody isn't a chick eater.
I have hatched only 3 times, but have never had a broody eat a chick, nor has any broody let another hen or rooster eat chicks. With that said, my broodies are in their own little mini coop and run. Everyone can see each other, but can't get to the broody and chicks, or eggs before they hatch. Good luck, really hope your broody isn't an A-hole.

Barnyard surprise. Free eggs from Chicken Rancher just to see if broody would hatch. This is #2 broody.

When I introduced EE chicks to first broody in spring, she kept pecking. I tried 3 times and pulled them.

I pulled the shrink wrap off already thinking it was ready. It kicked once and didn't move much. Yes, #3 is breathing. #4 shoved the beak through the pip. I left it for now. So 3 live chicks. At the moment.

3 out of 4 isn't a bad hatch, my first hatch with a young broody was 4 out of 6. She seems to be good with chick number 2, I think there may have been a problem with chick number 1. Can't wait to see pictures of all three.

LOL that's Gator! Great Pyrenees/Black Lab and probably about the size of a young black bear.

Sounds like one too sometimes when he play growls or coughs up lol
