The rust

I was just reading a thread that said a little rust isn't a big deal. Do you think lightly sanding it every now and then to keep it from spreading is a good idea? One reader on this old thread suggested a process with sanding and naval jelly to rid the metal of rust and prevent further but I know nothing of this stuff and if it's safe to use. Going to check it out further.
