Did someone say chicks? I have a bowl of popcorn.

These are my Meaties, which arrived this morning. 3 days in transit even though they were just coming from Oregon, but that seems par of the course with the USPS. They were all alive, but really interested in the water dish. One thinks its a wading pool.

Have you done meaties before? Any tips/suggestions?

I got two this year for the first time, as "practice" for the turkeys I am raising for Thanksgiving and Christmas. They are two weeks old today and already double the size of the regular chicks I got same day.

This is my 5th or 6th time raising them. This is what worked for me.

--Get them outside as soon as possible. I typically start giving them yard access at 9 or 10 days.

--After 2 weeks, start limiting food. By 3 weeks, I was feeding them only twice a day. Basically, all they could eat in 15 to 30 minutes. I'd scatter some vegetables and sprouted fodder about the yard in the middle of the day, to encourage them to move around and give them something to do.

--I ferment my feed. I really do think it helps with poop management.

--They run hot, so make sure they have plenty of water and shade available.

If you don't let them gorge themselves 24/7 and they have plenty of space, they are actually nice birds. I enjoy raising them every year and do some hand-wringing when it comes time for freezer camp.

@room onthebroom , you're the official record holder for most yoga mats belonging to a single person!

Question is, does she do that much yoga, teach a class or just keeps buying new ones?

Like the weight set I was gifted. I only lift them when they are in the way. I still haven't seen any benefit.

:lau:gig:lau
We have one for every member of the family. Ya know, good intentions and all that, but I think only two have been used by DH & DD3. I really do want to learn how to do yoga & bought myself the thickest one I could find. I pulled it out one day, got on the floor & could barely get back up. I still want to learn, but I think I need one of those 'Yoga from your chair' DVD's.

I realize they are eventual dinner but still....
:love:love:love:love:love

Gotta luv fluffy chicks!
They are pretty cute. Little wilson tennis balls.

Carrying this small box out of the post office this morning, it seemed incredible to think that, barring problems, this tiny box contains an entire year's supply of chicken meat for us. Literally, I have not bought any chicken meat since I've started raising meaties.
